If your son or daughter is headed off to college no doubt he or she wants a way to listen to some tunes while studying (or not studying as the case may be). Over the past months we’ve seen a host of decent bluetooth speakers and many would be great for a college dorm. Three that recently came to us for review stand out as excellent options. They are the Logitech Bluetooth Speakers Z600 for PC/Mac computer, tablet and smartphone,
the Soundfreaq Sound Step with Lightning Connector and the iLuv Mo ‘Beats HD High Definition Rechargeable Bluetooth Speaker with Viewing Cradle. The speakers range in price from sub-$100 to $149.99 and each offers some great features. Lets run down a few specifics on each.
First up is the iLuv Mo ‘Beats HD High Definition Rechargeable Bluetooth Speaker with Viewing Cradle. The speaker has an MSRP of $129.99 and had a few features that make it great for a dorm room. Bluetooth connectivity lets you stream music from up to 30 feet away and NFC pairing makes it simple to connect any NFC-enabled device by simply touching the device to the speaker. An innovative universal cradle pops up from the top of the speaker and easily handles a variety of smartphones and tablets. Add in iLuv’s “high-fidelity sound with jAura technology” and SRS sound processing and the small speaker packs a pretty good punch. And since the Mo ‘Beats HD packs a rechargeable lithium-ion battery inside it can go from the dorm to the quad and back again.

Next up is the Soundfreaq Sound Step with Lightning Connector. It has an MSRP of $129.99 and offers a surprising number of features for that price. The Sound Step with Lightning Connector features a 2.1 speaker configuration with a dedicated sub-woofer. It also has “Soundfreaq’s proprietary UQ3 spatial sound enhancement to deliver natural bass and stereo separation, unique for a compact speaker”. What really makes the Sound Step with Lightning Connector stand out is the wide range of different ways it can connect to different audio sources. It has an Aux In port, a USB In connector, Bluetooth and a Lightning Connector. That makes it perfect for the college student who uses iOS devices but great for people with just about any other current device as well.

Finally there is there are the Logitech Bluetooth Speakers Z600 for PC/Mac computer, tablet and smartphone. We reviewed these $149.99 speakers the other day and were more than a bit impressed. (Read the review.) The Z600s have a great look, an excellent build-quality and, thanks to 3 high-performance drivers in each speaker, that pack a huge punch and sound great as they do. Along with the controls hidden along the back of one speaker (the volume control is a touchpad atop that same speaker) is a 3.5mm Aux In port. That a great way to get audio to the Logitech Z600s but the speakers offer three additional ways to connect — Bluetooth, Bluetooth and Bluetooth. Yes, the Z600 speakers can connect to three different Bluetooth devices simultaneously and switching from one to the other is as simple as pressing “Pause” on the first and “Play” on the second. And for computers that don’t have Bluetooth Logitech even includes a USB Bluetooth adapter.
