If you are looking for a convenient way to protect your iPad while also allowing you to use one of Apple’s smartcovers and you also want a terrific way to use the tablet hands free look no further than NewerTech’s iPad and iPad mini offerings. There are three different parts to this case/stand combination and each deserves individual focus.

NewerTech NuGuard GripStand mini

The back protection of this system comes in the form of a hard plastic shell with bump-dampening material at key vulnerable spots on the larger versions.

The shell isn’t much speak of except for the fact that it not only protects the majority of the iPad’s back and sides while also allowing an Apple smartcover to attach to it. A strategically placed cutout in the center of the shell is the basis – and attachment point – for the rest of the system. Available for a variety of different iPad models, without it nothing else would be possible.

The Newer Technology NuGuard GripStand

The GripStand is a key component of this system. It snaps into the opening at the back of the case and services as a handgrip, stand grip and more. It lets you keep hold of your iPad with comfort but also adjusts to a wide range of different angles when placed on a flat surface. Finally, since it had a closed ring at the back you can hang the iPad from it. The variety or uses and flexibility it offers are limited only by your needs and creativity.

As Newer Technology explains when describing the version for the 2nd, 3rd and 4 th generation iPad:

Get a grip on your iPad 2nd, 3rd & 4th Gen display needs. The Newer Technology NuGuard GripStand 3 is a multipurpose tool for your Apple iPad 2nd, 3rd & 4th Gen. The hard plastic protective shell grips your iPad 3rd Gen snugly while enveloping it in a shock-absorbing inner rubber liner. The removable, desktop stand can be swiveled 360° and positioned at virtually any angle for viewing or typing. The desktop stand also doubles as a highly effective one hand grip so you can use your iPad 3rd Gen while standing or walking. Take presentations to the next level, the NuGuard GripStand 3 handle can even be rotated to use as a hook to hang your iPad 2nd, 3rd & 4th Gen on the wall in either landscape or portrait orientation. Use the desktop stand as a handle to carry your iPad 2nd, 3rd & 4th Gen like a briefcase. Or, when travel bag space is a consideration, just twist the desktop stand to remove it.

Newer Technology NuGuard Gripbase

NewerTech® iDevice NuGuard® GripBase for NuGuard GripStand GripStand 2 or GripStand 3

While the GripStand lets you set the iPad at a variety of different angles or keep a good grip on it, the Gripbase is for those times you need to set the iPad on a flat surface but have it raised up enough for easy viewing.

Made from quality materials the stand works with the same shell, locks into the open area at the back and does a great job of turning the iPad into a second screen for your laptop or makes a great way to add a Bluetooth keyboard and use the iPad as a laptop/desktop replacement.

As NewerTechnology explains:

Turn the Apple® iPad® into a desktop workstation with the Newer Technology NuGuard Gripbase pedestal accessory. Now you can elevate your view by replacing the sure-grip portability handle on the GripStand 1, 2, 3/4 models, and GripStand mini models with the GripBase and enjoy fully adjustable viewing angles in landscape or portrait modes along with 360° rotation. The wide, weighted design ensures the GripBase will remain stationary on a desk even in high traffic areas.

At just $19.99 when purchased alone it is a great addition for anyone using this system. It is also available as part of a bundle. Check it out.

Newer Technology GripBase Podium Floor Stand Podium for Apple iPad and iPad mini

The final piece of the system is the GripBase Podium. This metal pole atop a heavy base uses the same system to grab hold of your iPad or iPad mini and turns it into a freestanding unit that can be helpful in any number of situations.

It comes with a heavy base, an adjustable stand, a base cover to give it clean lines and a bolt for securing the pole to the base. Assembly took just two minutes.

DSC04509Here it is extended to maximum height.

It’s adjustable height make it ideal for the musician looking to replace their dead tree sheet music or the lecturer who doesn’t have a standing desk upon which they can place their class notes. This accessory has come in handy when I was watching movies on my iPad while sitting on the couch since, unlike the other parts of this system, it doesn’t require a flat surface or a good grip to hold its position.

Here’s what Newer Technology has to say:

Your eyes and body will thank you when you place your iPad atop the GripBase Podium. No more leaning over, straining your neck, or squinting your eyes to view your iPad’s display…this unique accessory opens up a new world of comfortable viewing flexibility. It easily attaches to the included protective GripStand case which holds your iPad securely while still allowing full access to all controls and connections.

You can raise your iPad from 38 inches to nearly five feet, swivel it 360° and position it at virtually any angle for accessing music or song lists in the recording studio, making presentations in the classroom or boardroom, even reading or watching movies in bed.

Keeping the entire assembly securely grounded is a heavy-duty, plastic coated 12.55 pound base. Besides being nearly impossible to tip over, the GripBase Podium won’t mar your floors should you need to reposition it.

  • Extends from 38 inches to nearly five feet high
  • Ribbed twist lock prevents extension shaft slippage
  • Full 360 degree rotation for easy selection of landscape or portrait viewing modes.
  • No need to remove case…just spin to desired orientation.
  • Tilt and swivel to virtually any angle
  • Heavy duty, plastic coated 12.55 pound base

For me this is the key aspect of this system that makes it so usable for anyone who relies on their iPad for work and play. As someone who uses an iPad for teaching, speeches, etc being able to set the iPad in front of me at eye-level and know it is held securely in either landscape or portrait is fantastic. And being able to quickly remove it from the stand and, within seconds, either hold it or place it on a desk or countertop means I have total controls of where and how I use my tablet. Check it out.

In all I have been more than a bit impressed with this entire system. As someone who makes use of an iPad in both professional and personal settings this has been one of the more flexible, not to mention reliable, iPad accessories I have used. Best of all the components in this system won’t break the bank and, as you upgrade your iPad you are able to replace the case and continue using the other accessories. Now that’s a case/base/stand system that will grow with you. Learn more about entire system and all the available components here.
