I’ve made no secret of my love for all things WaterField. Their bags, sleeves, and backpacks are amazing, and I use at least one of their products daily. WaterField’s offerings aren’t inexpensive, but the high-quality materials and craftsmanship, combined with their remarkable durability, make them a worthwhile investment. In this review, we’ll take a look at the WaterField Hudson Leather Crossbody. It’s a small EDC bag that looks amazing and is a superb example of why WaterField is my fave.

The WaterField Hudson arrives in a small, cloth bag. I appreciate the lack of plastic used in the packaging and shipping, and love that I can use the bag for small items when I travel.

WaterField Hudson Leather Crossbody comes with a storage bag

The Hudson Leather crossbody is impressive. The black full-grain leather is perfect. There isn’t a blemish to be found, and the seams are tight with zero loose threads. It also has a heft that gives it a substantial weight and presence. It isn’t heavy or cumbersome — that would defeat the purpose of a small EDC bag — but it feels substantial in the hand.

A closer examination reveals the subtle texture and grain that you’ll only find in items made from premium hides. Still, the clean lines and finish of the leather make it the kind of item that commands restrained attention. It’s not a bag searching for compliments, but it offers a level of depth and character that promises to impress.

Here’s My Video Review

The design of the WaterField Hudson is what I would refer to as “smartly balanced.”

It has a double-layer leather flap, clean diagonal front detailing, and a simple buckle that works beautifully but doesn’t demand attention. Overall, the Hudson wears more like a refined accessory than a gear bag.

The closure mechanism feels like modern engineering married to classical proportions, a harmony that echoes much of what I’ve admired in WaterField’s other leather and hybrid designs.

I’ve got an assortment of bags and backpacks from WaterField. This bag, like the others, earns high marks for the design and execution. If you’ve followed my previous Gear Diary reviews of WaterField bags, you know I have little patience for sloppy stitching, weak hardware, or corners cut in stress zones that result in good-looking bags that last just one or two seasons. In the Hudson, most of what I expect from WaterField — and more — is delivered.

Leather and Construction

The Hudson is built with full-grain leather, making it one of WaterField’s “all-leather” offerings. The company also offers a host of products made from other materials, like waxed canvas or ballistic nylon, for those who prefer something that looks more casual or is made from lighter materials.

The leather has just enough thickness to maintain shape (especially in the flap) while still allowing the body to flex when stuffed. At the same time, it has enough structure so that, when just partially filled, it sits nicely rather than flopping over.

I always love getting new WaterField bags, but I have to admit to loving them even more once they start to wear in and get the patina and blemishes that make my WaterField bags uniquely mine. Here’s an example of my most-loved bag. As you can see, it looks as loved as it is — this bag has literally been all over the world with me: Israel, Jordan, Alaska, Greece, the Galápagos Islands, and more. Yet, it remains as solid and reliable as the day I got it.

I expect that, over time, the WaterField Hudson will also develop the same unique patina and blemishes without compromising the bag’s integrity.

Stitching, Edges, and Reinforcements

As you would expect with a premium bag like this, the stitching is flawless. It features consistent, tight rows, clean termination points, reinforced bar tacks at strap anchors, and well-defined flap corners. I tested gentle torque and stress (okay, I pulled, pushed, and twisted it mercilessly), and nothing gave.

The edges reflect the same craftsmanship and attention to detail. The edges are burnished at the leather seams, the transitions flow from one piece of leather to the next, and the leather flap meets the leather body of the bag with a refinement that only the finest artisans can achieve.

Of course, the WaterField Hudson ships with a shoulder strap, and the strap mount points have additional leather backing / tabs to distribute load over the surface. This design, rather than merely using a series of lines of thread, is the type of detail that makes the difference if you plan to keep a bag for years to come.

Hardware, Closures, and Magnets

One of the WaterField Hudson’s standout features is its dual magnetic closure system that includes a self-finding Fidlock buckle. The magnets in the mechanism help align the flap and make one-handed access a simple and fluid process. It also helps that the mechanism automatically aligns and locks the bag closed when the two sides are brought together. It offers a satisfying “click” and locks securely, yet releases cleanly — no hanging or misalignment.

The bag’s metal hardware (D-rings and strap adjuster) is solid and has a muted finish for a clean, unassuming look.

Opening the WaterField Hudson Leather Crossbody

The main opening has no snaps or zippers.

Instead, it employs magnets to keep items safely inside.

This makes grabbing items from inside the bag simple and quick. In the process, however, you lose the security of knowing there is a zipper keeping everything securely inside. It’s a trade-off, and thankfully, the magnetic closure is quite strong.

Finally, despite the clean lines and minimalist design, the Hudson Leather Crossbody has an open, rear quick-access pocket. This added feature is ideal for things you want to access quickly (metro card, transit ticket) without opening the main compartment.

Lining and Interior

Lining inside the WaterField Hudson Leather Crossbody

As usual, WaterField put as much attention and detail into the bag’s interior as they did the exterior. The interior is lined with their signature gold-tone fabric. It looks great, but more importantly, it makes it easier to see items stowed inside the bag.

A dedicated internal phone/device pocket that is large enough for current iPhones lets you leave your phone safely inside the bag. This is especially useful if you have an Apple Watch or AirPods and don’t need to access your phone for most normal tasks.

Finally, an internal zippered pocket helps keep small valuables separate and secure.

Form, Features, and Daily Use

The WaterField Hudson is ideal for days when you are carrying a few key items and don’t want to weigh down your pockets, but not so much that you need a larger backpack or shoulder bag. It measures 10″ long by 3″ wide by 7″tall and has an internal holding capacity of about 3.5 L.

The included shoulder strap is both adjustable and detachable. At 1.5″ wide and with an adjustable length from 27″ to just over 50″, it’s designed for everyone regardless of height and weight.

And it’s comfortable to wear. Whether used as a small shoulder bag or worn as a crossbody bag, it remains comfortable and balanced, even when loaded with items such as a wallet, phone, small notepad, and keys. The smooth leather backing enhances comfort during long days.

WaterField Hudson Access and Organization

  • The flap with a magnetic closure is intuitive: simply slip your hand under, and the flap opens smoothly — no wrestling with zippers.
  • The main compartment is practical; the gold liner helps with locating smaller items (earbuds, cables) quickly.
  • The dedicated internal phone/device pocket keeps that item secure, upright, and easy to locate.
  • The interior zip pocket is perfect for keys, cards, or small pouches.
  • The rear external pocket is ideal for small, flat items that require easy accessibility.

The absence of a full-length zipper for main access trades off maximum weather sealing for convenience; you’ll want to be mindful in heavy rain.

The WaterField Hudson is an unusual offering from the brand because it can easily transition between serving as a primary bag and a gear pouch nested inside a larger bag. The detachable strap makes it simple to wear the bag one minute and then slip it into a larger tote or suitcase and pull it out when needed the next.

For daily errands, work commutes, or casual evenings, the WaterField Hudson is stylish yet unobtrusive. It also transitions nicely (in black leather) to settings where you don’t want a “gear bag” look.

My wife thinks it looks a bit too much like a purse, but, at this point in my life, I don’t care either way. Keeping my gear with me and safe without overstuffing my pockets is most important to me.

Final Take

The Hudson Leather Crossbody, especially in Black, stands out as one of WaterField’s more compelling leather-first designs. It captures so much of the promise I look for in their bags, from strong materials to exquisite craftsmanship and intelligent design, and packages it in a size and form factor that’s practical, stylish, and versatile.

The WaterField Hudson is an elegant fusion of leather craftsmanship with modern magnetic convenience. The thoughtful interior layout features a device pocket, a zippered pocket, and a rear access pocket, all designed to keep items secure and organized. The adjustable and detachable strap lets people of all sizes use the bag and allows it to double as an in-bag organizer.

The only caveats I would offer are that the flap and magnetic closure, while convenient, lack the absolute security (or sealing) a full zip offers, and the small size limits how much you can carry.

If you’re a WaterField fan (as I am) and you’ve been waiting for a full-leather crossbody that doesn’t compromise on usability, the Hudson is it. It may not replace their ballistic or textile messengers in heavy-duty scenarios where a laptop or tablet is required, but for minimal daily carry, travel, or refined casual wear, it’s an impressive offering.

The WaterField Hudson Leather Crossbody retails for $329; it is available directly from the manufacturer.
