The Lowdown
If you already have a library of colorful Amazon Kindle content and you’re looking for a dedicated e-reader, the Amazon Kindle Colorsoft 2026 E-Reader is an easy recommendation. It works as expected, is light and portable, and has a good screen for the price. The variety of covers and accessories like page-turners are also a draw, but color e-ink still carries a high price tag compared to black-and-white e-readers. Owners of the previous-generation Colorsoft aren’t given compelling reasons to upgrade, but for anyone else, it’s worth a look!
Overall
Pros
- Thin and Light
- Good Screen
- Excellent Battery Life
Cons
- Auto-Backlight is Restricted to Signature Edition
- Touch Interactions Feel Slow
The color e-ink reader world is expanding bit by bit, but if you’re like me, you already have dozens to hundreds of books in your Kindle library, which makes Kindle products a top choice if you’re looking for an e-reader. The combination of an upgraded color e-ink screen and stellar battery life makes for a potent little e-reader in the latest Amazon Kindle Colorsoft 2026 E-Reader, but if you already have the previous edition Colorsoft, the upgrade might not be enough to convince you to splurge on the new model.
What’s in the Box
The Amazon Kindle Colorsoft 2026 E-Reader comes in an all-paper recyclable box with nothing else but a small paper info/warning sheet. You’ll need to supply your own charger (USB-C), which nearly everyone already has by now. The Signature Edition has an optional charging cradle stand (but loses wireless charging from the previous model). I was sent the base Colorsoft with no accessories for review.

Design and Features
The design of the Amazon Kindle Colorsoft 2026 E-Reader is extremely familiar if you’ve used any Amazon Kindle product over the last decade or so. The biggest design change from the previous Colorsoft is that the display is now flush with the device surface instead of recessed, and the overall dimensions have been trimmed by a few millimeters.
The back of the Colorsoft is a soft-touch plastic that has a hidden trick: it can now be easily popped off by the user to replace the battery in the future. I love that they finally did this so you could potentially use this device for years and just replace the battery when it wears out.
The bottom of the device houses the USB-C charging port. A full charge from empty takes about 2 hours, and battery life is rated for up to 8 weeks. An LED light indicates charging status.
The device has only one button: the power button; everything else is controlled through touchscreen interactions.
Setup
Setting up the Amazon Kindle Colorsoft 2026 E-Reader is easy, especially if you already have the Amazon Kindle app installed on your mobile device. I went this route since I already read frequently on my phone, and it really was as simple as clicking a button in the app to set up the Colorsoft.
The last step of setup is an explainer for color e-ink, which is good for people new to the technology. Page refreshes (especially on color-intensive pages) do result in a full-screen refresh that can look like a glitch if you’re not used to it. This tutorial hopefully prevents people from thinking their device has a problem.
Even in graphic novels, I didn’t notice nearly as many full-page refreshes as on previous color e-ink devices I’ve tested, though that may be anecdotal to the specific books I was reading (I don’t have the old devices anymore to compare).
Performance
I was excited to test out the Amazon Kindle Colorsoft 2026 E-Reader as a distraction-free reader option. I’m constantly distracted by incoming notifications or the urge to check my online stores to see how sales are going, so by using a dedicated e-reader, I’m hoping to avoid that and focus on reading for longer periods.
I read books, comics, graphic novels, and some children’s picture books with our child, and I was very happy with the device throughout the review period. The screen is easy on the eyes and has enough color and clarity to do justice to the variety of content I tried.
The Colorsoft is light and easy to hold for extended periods, and the flush screen feels good to read and interact with (though there is a noticeable slight delay in touch interaction that feels like lag at first, but you get used to it over time). I love that Amazon switched to a user-replaceable battery, as I hate sealed-battery devices and their inevitable battery death.
Like previous models, the Colorsoft is water-resistant so you can use it at the pool or in the bath. The IPX8 rating means there’s no rated dust resistance, though, so you’ll want to be careful around sand and dusty environments.
Battery life is excellent; I used only about 50% of the battery over many hours of reading during the multi-week review period.
Overall, I was happy with the performance of the Amazon Kindle Colorsoft 2026 E-Reader and had no issues or problems using it. The 7-inch screen can feel cramped for some graphic novels, but Amazon Kindle’s auto-zoom in most comics works well for navigating panels that are too small to view fully on the screen.
Final Thoughts
If you already have a library of colorful Amazon Kindle content and you’re looking for a dedicated e-reader, the Amazon Kindle Colorsoft 2026 E-Reader is an easy recommendation. It works as expected, is light and portable, and has a good screen for the price. Owners of the previous-generation Colorsoft aren’t given compelling reasons to upgrade, but for anyone else, it’s worth a look!
The Amazon Kindle Colorsoft 2026 E-Reader retails for $289; it is available directly from Amazon.
