Incipio [Performance] Series Level 2 Dual-Layered Drop Protection

We’ve looked at the Incipio [Performance] Series Level 1 case. (Read the review.) It’s thin and light, and it offers just enough protection. If, however, you still want thin and light but need a bit more protection, you’ll want to check out the Incipio [Performance] Series Level 2 Dual Layered Drop Protection for iPhone 6 and iPhone 6S.

The Level 2 cases have a similar design to the Level 1 but are a bit thicker. They come in four different colors and have an MSRP of just $29.99.

Here’s what Incipio has to say about the case:

Adding a second layer of defense to your iPhone 6/6s, the [Performance] Series Level 2 case protects your device at impact. An integrated impact ridge provides military grade protection, while the outer scratch-resistant shell easily slips into pockets and bags. A slim case with dual level defense, the [Performance] Series case for iPhone 6/6s delivers excellent drop protection without the bulk.

The case goes onto the iPhone quite simply. You just put the side with the volume buttons in and then push down. Once the phone is firmly seated in the case, you get complete access to the phone’s screen but also get a good degree of lay-on-the-table protection.

The back has a similar design as the Level 1 case. The Incipio name is toward the bottom, and a raised area running around the sides of the back adds a bit of protection while still keeping the case as thin as possible.

The volume and power buttons are covered and clearly marked. They work just fine despite there being material covering them. The mute toggle is left exposed but is recessed enough that it really takes putting a fingernail into the opening in order to access it. A ridge running around the sides adds visual interest but also serves to add some cushioning in case you drop the phone. This ridged design covers the corners, the most vulnerable part of the phone, as well.

The bottom of the case covers as much as possible while still leaving the speaker, Lightning connector port, 3.5mm headphone jack, and microphone open and accessible. It is a smart design that provides as much cover as it can without limiting the access you need in order to have complete functionality of the case.

Here’s a look at the case on camera:

I like the balance this $29.99 cases strikes between protection and lightness. I definitely want more protection than the Level 1 case offers but don’t love adding tons of weight and bulk to the case. With the Level 2 case you don’t have to. After all, Apple made great strides in getting the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6S as thin and light as possible. Burying it in a thick, boxy case makes no sense to me.
