Believe it or not, there are still plenty of people who wear regular wristwatches. A good watch is a fashion statement that helps reflect your style in addition to handily telling the time. The Awake Watch looks to add yet another dimension to that, with watches made from recycled materials to keep plastics out of the ocean.
The watches are made from recycled plastics, recycled metals, and solar-powered Japanese watch movements. For those who prefer something other than plastics, there are also vegetable tanned leather straps and rubber (with a hint of vanilla to balance out the rubber smell!). Awake Watches come in green witch, blue reef, moon black, and wild brown, with a special deep blue color available temporarily only through their Kickstarter.
Awake says the watches are waterproof to 100m, plus the watches have what they call “K1 Ultra Resistant Glass”, which presumably makes the watches extraordinarily durable. They ship in recyclable boxes (of course), and follow the model of skipping the middleman to keep their costs low and quality high.
The guys behind Awake are focused on more than just recycling; they also support an organization called Trash Heroes that helps beach cleanups and has removed over 408 tons of trash! It’s clear that Awake is intent on considering all aspects of sustainability and recycling from product, packaging, and community.
Right now the Awake watches are $229 on Kickstarter, but they will retail for $349 once the campaign ends. It’s currently fully funded and has two weeks to go, so check it out now!
