The Lowdown

I am very torn about the Torras Coolify Portable Air Conditioner. It works really well and does exactly what they say it will do. The problem is that it’s not cheap at $149, so you have to really want or need portable cooling for this to be a justifiable gadget. If you do fit in that niche, this is a well-made and well-designed device that works extremely well!

Sometimes we get to review items that are clearly bizarre gimmicks. Other times what starts as a silly gimmick turns out to be a legitimately useful product. When the Torras Coolify Portable Air Conditioner first arrived, I didn’t take it seriously. Did it win me over? Read on to find out!

Torras Coolify Portable Air Conditioner

I will give Torras this — I expected a significantly chunkier product for a “wearable air conditioner” and was pleasantly surprised by how lightweight and compact it was.

It weighs in at 12.3 ounces and sits comfortably around your neck without feeling uncomfortable. There’s clearly purposeful design at play, as the weight is distributed at the back of the neck and then towards the front, making it rest comfortably and naturally. Each of the sides has bladeless fans, and at their connection points for the back, there’s a flexible hinge so you can fit the air conditioner to various neck sizes. For example, my son is only 8 and can tuck the air conditioner blades in tighter while I keep them a little wider to sit around my shirt collars.

I have very short hair, but my son keeps his between chin and neck length. Torras says the bladeless fan design keeps hair from being caught or pulled, and my pint-size review assistant said his hair remained free of any yanking, tangles, or other encounters with the fans.

I was very worried the Torras Coolify Portable Air Conditioner would look strange. Still, it resembles headphones enough that most people probably wouldn’t immediately leap to “Oh, that person is obviously wearing a personal air conditioner!”  It helps that there are metal circles at the ends, which sort of look like speakers if you glanced really quickly. They even have L and R indications, so you don’t put your air conditioner on upside down (because really, it would be so embarrassing if someone saw you wearing your air conditioner the wrong way…so gauche!)

The Torras Coolify Portable Air Conditioner charges via USB-C, and the battery life is extraordinary. I only charged it once during the review period, and it felt like the battery would never die, even with my son using it for a few minutes daily. He swore it helped “cool him down” after a long day of day camp.

You cannot use it while charging, but Torras says it only needs two hours to be fully charged and that it can run for up to 8 hours. Also, while you could maybe look somewhat cool wearing an air conditioner, you definitely will not look cool wearing an air conditioner while plugged into an outlet.

All aesthetic discussion aside, the more important question is how this thing works. The Torras Coolify Portable Air Conditioner really does cool you down, blowing air above and below you to keep your head and neck chilled. There is one button that controls power and fan speed, and it’s easy to find without looking to turn the Coolify on and off and adjust speeds.

I really thought this was a weird gimmick, but it’s been a painfully hot summer, and a few times, even with central air, it felt like the hot air rising in my house was getting to be way too much by the time it reached my 2nd-floor bedroom. It’s not really comfortable to sleep with the Torras Coolify Portable Air Conditioner around your neck, but it does help lower your temperature a bit if you’re really suffering. I could see this being extremely helpful if you work in a hot environment. The Torras Coolify Portable Air Conditioner is more effective and less messy than the old “cold towel around your neck” trick!

Torras says the Coolify is relatively quiet at 31 decibels, and it’s true that around your neck, you hear a rushing noise. Still, it doesn’t prevent you from carrying on a conversation or watching television at a normal volume. On the other hand, if, say, you WANT to drown out the outside world, flipping the Coolify like it’s a pair of headphones and positioning the fans over your ears is really effective. Like a cooling white noise machine.

The Torras Coolify Portable Air Conditioner is very helpful if your head is hot and, say, your review assistant is watching yet another Minecraft walkthrough video right next to you as you write your review … pop the Coolify on top of your head, cover your ears, and enjoy blissful whooooooooosh noises. Note that it does make your ears cold if you go this route.

The Torras Coolify Portable Air Conditioner retails for $149; it is available directly from the manufacturer and Amazon.
