Sealy Posturepedic Plus Hybrid Review: The Mattress That Consistently Gives My Wife and Me Our Best Sleep

The Lowdown

The Sealy Posturepedic Plus Hybrid with Ultimate Support and Cooling technology is an expensive mattress, but it is a good example of “you get what you pay for.” It is constructed from premium materials, well-made, and incredibly comfortable thanks to the hybrid construction and advanced cooling memory foam.

For the first time in years, I wake up pain-free; the only thing that has changed is the mattress. To paraphrase an old commercial, “A good night’s sleep and pain-free mornings… priceless.” In this case, however, there is a price that is well worth every penny.

Cons

My wife Raina and I met nine years ago this month and recently celebrated our eighth wedding anniversary. Finding a bed we both loved has taken almost a decade, but we have finally arrived, thanks to the Sealy Posturepedic Plus Hybrid. It’s firm yet comfortable; we sleep great and stay cool overnight! Let’s take a look.

Raina’s and my mattress journey has been far longer than I might have expected. When we first met, I had a full-size bed-in-box we both loved. It was firm and supportive without being overly hard. But we wanted a king mattress, and the hunt began.

We got one that appeared to be similar to the full-size mattress. It, too, came in a box, and, at first, it seemed to be okay. But after a week or so, we both began waking up with neck and back pain.

So we got a different mattress.

Like the first one, it was a bed-in-a-box. This time, though, we went for something a bit more expensive. Unfortunately, while I was okay with the new mattress, Raina hated it from day one.

So we got another mattress.

This time, we went for a pricey, brand-name adjustable mattress. It would allow us to get the proper firmness for our comfort; I wouldn’t say I liked it.

So we got yet another mattress.

When, two mattresses later, we still weren’t happy, I began to think we would never find the right mattress for both of us to get a good night of sleep.

Then, the Sealy Posturepedic Plus Hybrid arrived for review, and we realized the difference the right mattress makes.

We were sent a firm king-size Sealy Posturepedic Plus Hybrid mattress that has Sealy’s Ultimate Support and Cooling technology. That brought the price for the mattress to a hefty $2899, but after having slept on it for two weeks, I would pay double for the comfort and restful sleep I’m getting.

Although the company’s marketing team wrote this, I could just have easily written it:

If you want to be your best, you must sleep your best. That’s why our signature Posturepedic Plus Hybrid features the best in Sealy materials and expertise. The Sealy Posturepedic Plus Hybrid is different because it is neither a coil nor a memory foam mattress.

Instead, it combines the two technologies to create excellent support, durability, and cooling. Our best mattress takes cooling and support to the next level.

Featuring the most premium Sealy materials, increased durability, and more responsive support — for the deep, relaxing sleep you need to take on tomorrow.

Most mattresses use innerspring coils or memory foam to create a supportive platform. A few mattresses employ memory foam of different densities to create more support or provide different types of support to different body parts. Our new mattress combines the two approaches, and the result is fantastic.

Pair the best qualities of premium innerspring with memory foam materials to enjoy best-of-both-worlds comfort. Carefully engineered coils adapt and support every part of your body, while specialty foams conform and cushion for your most comfortable night’s sleep.

I never thought much about what goes into making a quality mattress like this. While researching this bed before its arrival, I was shocked to see how many different layers of material Sealy used in its construction. As this cutaway image shows, this is a technologically advanced mattress.

The reason the Sealy Posturepedic Plus Hybrid mattress’s combination is so effective is that each of the approaches serves a different purpose. The individually wrapped coils provide support and comfort while reducing motion transfer.

This is especially important for Raina and me since I toss and turn at night. In the past, my movements often woke her up.

The advanced gel foam layer, on the other hand, helps disperse body weight across the mattress and, in the process, relieves pressure. That’s why I’ve been waking up without the soreness and body aches I had grown to accept as inevitable.

“Our SealyChill cooling cover features spun, cool-to-the-touch fibers for refreshing comfort from the moment you lie down.”

Finally, a cooling cover layer works with the 1000 individually wrapped coils to permit extra airflow and breathability and helps prevent overheating during the night.

For the last few years, we slept with a bed topper that mechanically blows cool air while we slept. Having gotten used to a “cool sleep,” I was worried I would get too hot overnight. The review sample I was sent includes Sealy’s Ultimate Support and Cooling technology.

The additional layer results in a mattress that is 14″ thick versus 13″ for the basic model (although there is nothing basic about Sealy’s basic model) and 13.5″ for the version with Advanced Support. Both the 13″ and 13.5″ models include the cooling cover. In contrast, the Ultimate Support and Cooling technology version we got adds additional cooling foams.

I’m pleased that this non-mechanical approach works well and is effective.

It is worth noting that opting for the Ultimate Support and Cooling technology upgrade also adds additional back and core support.

The Sealy Posturepedic Plus Hybrid mattress also includes edge support, so you get the same support along the entire surface. At the same time, Sealy’s Surface-Guard Technology helps protect the mattress surface from common allergens and bacteria.

All that is good, but the real test is how it feels to sleep on the mattress. I’m happy to report that this premium mattress provides a premium sleep experience.

While we wanted a firm mattress, I worried that it felt too firm when the bed arrived. The foam layer on top offered a bit of give, but the mattress felt hard. But while it IS firm, there is a fair amount of give in the surface layer to prevent pressure points, but even that layer offers support.

The result is a firm mattress that offers significant support while subtly cradling the various parts of your body. When I move during the night, the balance created by the firmness and the supportive layer allows for movement that is neither bouncy nor feels like I’m rolling over on a board.

Honestly, the Sealy Posturepedic Plus Hybrid is unlike any mattress I have slept on.

I’ve never been a great sleeper, and recent events have compounded that issue. There are nights when my mind races and I can barely sleep. There are other nights, however, when I am so tired that I crash as soon as my head hits the pillow. In the past, however, even on those nights, I would wake up numerous times.

That hasn’t been the case since we got this mattress.

Last night, for example, I got in bed, put my CPAP on, and seconds after I rested my head on the pillow, I was out. The next thing I knew, it was morning, and when I went to get out of bed, I had none of the stiffness that previously met me when the alarm sounded. I not only slept through the night, but I did so without the tossing and turning that used to plague me, and I awoke feeling refreshed, alert, and pain-free.

What changed? The Sealy Posturepedic Plus Hybrid mattress.

It is as simple as that, so I will recommend this mattress to anyone who will listen. It doesn’t prevent my sleepless nights, but on nights when I can sleep, it does let me get the best night’s sleep I have ever – EVER – gotten.

Sealy Posturepedic Plus Hybrid Features:

  • Pressure Relieving Foams: The most premium foam in our portfolio, ComfortSense Memory Foam adapts to your body by dispersing your weight evenly across the mattress and relieving pressure points, for maximum conforming comfort.
  • One-of-a-Kind Coils: Our most durable coils are individually wrapped for reduced motion transfer, providing even more support and comfort. Found in Sealy hybrids, these encased coils provide increased airflow, support, and durability along the edges of the mattress, so it maintains its shape for years to come.
  • Cooler Nights: Features a cooling cover and over 1,000 individually wrapped coils that allow for extra breathability so you can fall asleep faster and sleep cooler.
  • So Fresh. So Clean.: Our covers feature Surface-Guard Technology, protecting the mattress surface from common allergens and bacteria so you can rest easy.

Finally, I should note that while most of our previous beds were dropped off by UPS or FedEx because this is a more traditional style mattress, it had to be delivered by a specific company. They were terrific. They communicated clearly, arrived when they said they would, and removed the old mattress.
