There are 830 million people in the world with some form of diabetes. Unfortunately, that means it’s almost guaranteed that someone you know needs to deal with the hassle of tracking blood sugar. Usually, this is done by testing their blood periodically throughout the day, which means lots of poking of fingertips. Isaac by PreEvnt has a better, less messy plan by harnessing the power of your breath!
It’s actually pretty scientifically solid to be able to figure out your blood sugar from your breath. When you exhale, you let out volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Specifically, the level of acetone in your blood can correlate to your blood sugar levels. If your acetone levels are high, then there’s a good chance your blood sugar is also high.
Fun fact: sniffing out acetones and other chemical changes is part of how service dogs can sniff out blood sugar events!
However, if you don’t have a service dog or can’t take the dog everywhere, you’re still back to the same “poke a hole in your finger and steal your own blood” approach. That’s where isaac comes in, as you can blow into it and then use the companion iOS or Android app to see if your levels look appropriate. One charge lasts all day and can be worn discreetly around your neck for easy access.
The FDA hasn’t approved this, so it is not yet available in the USA. However, the potential benefits are huge, as this can benefit people with diabetes as well as people with pre-diabetes who are trying to understand their blood sugar levels and how to manage them effectively. It’s a much lower barrier to usage to just blow into a device over handling sharp objects!
Isaac by PreEvnt launch will be in August or September this year, selling for $399.99.
This would have been good for my late father, who hated needles.
This is such an awesome idea! My dad’s been on the line between pre-diabetic and diabetic for months now, so this would be perfect for him! No pricking, just breathing to track his levels.
