A laser engraver provides endless possibilities for those wanting to become a maker of crafts and products. I recently tried the AlgoLaser Alpha MK2 20W Diode Laser Engraver, which did not disappoint. I wanted to create a few items, including leatherette patches for caps and beanies. Laser designs are popular products right now, and it turns out that they are easy to make when you have the right equipment.

The AlgoLaser Alpha MK2 is a powerful and versatile laser engraver with a great balance of performance, features, and affordability. It’s a solid choice for both beginners and experienced users looking to create intricate engravings and precise cuts on a variety of materials. The 20W diode laser provides ample power for engraving and cutting through various materials like wood, acrylic, leather, and even some metals.

Parts included with the AlgoLaser Alpha MK2 20W Diode Laser Engraver

The AlgoLaser Alpha MK2 was simple to set up and use via the onboard operating system and color touch screen. My helper assembled and got the laser ready to engrave in about an hour.

With a 15.7″ x 16″ workspace, projects have endless possibilities. I completed some small projects and a large plaque for our fantasy football league, but I still had plenty of space to work with. The laser includes some test materials. I tried the wood with an engraving and cut out first, and it was not only simple but also fast and accurate.

Setting up the AlgoLaser Alpha MK2 20W Diode Laser Engraver

Several laser methods exist, including the AlgoLaser app, LightBurn, and LaserGRBL. The phone app is easy to use, but I prefer setting up projects using the onboard OS and the AlgoLaser Alpha MK2’s screen. It is intuitive and easy to get the settings correct. I add images to a USB thumb drive and plug it into the laser to load them.

Once the project size and settings were inputted, I lined up the material with the laser’s edge. Then, I previewed the project, watched the largest area’s laser outline, and ensured it was aligned to fit where I wanted it. After a few tries, I aligned and straightened the project quickly and got great results with every engraving and cutting.

Once you get comfortable with settings and how to adjust your images so that they look great when engraved, the projects come out nicely. I was able to change the Gear Diary image from the time I cut it out of this wood, engraved it on leatherette patches, and made some fantastic products.

Once you learn the settings, all of this is super fast and easy. I learned all this through trial and error in one afternoon, and I now have a great workflow.

We now have a permanent spot for the AlgoLaser Alpha MK2 in our craft room, so it is available for quick projects. I do not plan on selling items created using the laser, but if you are interested, it could easily be used for a small business setup.

I have barely scratched the surface of what the AlgoLaser Alpha MK2 20W Diode Laser Engraver can do with this review, and I plan on learning more as I go, but this laser is easy to use and gives excellent results.

The laser is fast-moving and relatively quiet, yet strong enough to cut a variety of materials. Tons of settings are available to ensure a great final product, and it is easy to learn what to do to get great results. The large workspace makes project possibilities nearly endless, and the onboard OS is intuitive and easy to use.
