The Lowdown
The 4Patriots Blackout Buddy Emergency Power Supply is a genuinely clever product that solves a real problem — automatically protecting your fridge during outages. The installation is simple, the switchover is seamless, and the remote monitoring screen is incredibly useful. But the 600W power limit is a real issue for modern refrigerators, and at $997, it’s an expensive gamble if you’re not sure your fridge will work with it.

If you want automatic backup power that kicks in the instant the lights go out, the 4Patriots Blackout Buddy delivers exactly what it promises. Installation is dead simple, the automatic switchover is seamless, and the remote monitoring screen is genuinely useful. But here’s the catch: fridge/freezer combos with ice makers may exceed the 600W max output. Our GE Profile fridge/freezer pulled 620W at peak, which means this may not work for some appliances. For older, lower-power fridges or freezers? It may work, but you’ll need to check the power draw.

The 4Patriots Blackout Buddy Emergency Power Supply is a first-of-its-kind automatic backup power system designed to protect your refrigerator the instant the power goes out—even if you’re not home. At $997 for a single unit (or $2,987 for a 3-pack), it’s positioned as a set-it-and-forget-it solution for keeping food cold during outages without the noise, fumes, or hassle of gas generators. We tested it for about two weeks in two different refrigerators, and the results were mixed, but that will depend on the power draw of your appliance.

4Patriots sent us a review sample of the Blackout Buddy, and right away, we ran into our first challenge: compatibility.
Here’s the elephant in the room: the Blackout Buddy maxes out at 600W continuous power. For context, our GE Profile French door fridge with freezer and ice maker peaked at about 620W during compressor startup. That’s above the limit, and the Blackout Buddy couldn’t handle it.
We moved the unit to our older backup fridge/freezer downstairs — a simpler model without an ice maker — and it worked perfectly. The takeaway? If you’ve got a modern, feature-loaded fridge with an ice maker, water dispenser, and all the bells and whistles, this might not work for you.
For older fridges, standalone freezers, or simpler appliances, the 4Patriots Blackout Buddy is a fantastic solution. But for cutting-edge refrigerators pulling more power, you’ll hit the 600W wall fast.

Installation was shockingly easy. We had room above our fridge, so we just set the 4Patriots Blackout Buddy on top. That’s it. Plug the fridge into the Blackout Buddy, plug the Blackout Buddy into the wall, and you’re done. Total time? Maybe five minutes.
The unit also comes with metal feet and a wall-mounting plate, so you can install it differently if you prefer. The wall mount would require more work — drilling, anchoring, the usual — but it’s an option if you want the Blackout Buddy completely hidden or tucked out of the way.
If you’re planning to hide it behind your fridge, just know you’ll need to pull the fridge out farther from the wall than it sits now. The 4Patriots Blackout Buddy is 2.5 inches thick, which isn’t massive, but it’s enough to lose some of the clearance between the fridge and the wall.
My only complaint with the installation is that the power cord isn’t that long. It’s barely long enough to plug into the battery on top of the fridge when your outlet is 18″ above the floor, which is standard height. If you pull out the fridge, you’ll need to unplug the battery.

We simulated a power outage by flipping the breaker, and the 4Patriots Blackout Buddy switched over almost instantly. In practice, there was zero noticeable downtime. The fridge didn’t skip a beat, the compressor stayed running, and everything kept humming along as if nothing had happened.
This is the killer feature. You don’t have to be home. You don’t have to think about it. The power goes out, and the Blackout Buddy takes over automatically in 20 milliseconds. For people worried about spoiled food or medicine during unexpected outages, this is exactly what you need.

We didn’t leave the power off for 34 hours straight to fully verify the runtime claim, but based on the 1,030Wh battery capacity and the power consumption of our older fridge, the estimate seems reasonable. The 4Patriots Blackout Buddy is designed to cycle your fridge, meaning it powers the compressor when it kicks on, then lets it rest when the compressor turns off.
If you’re smart about it and only run the fridge when the compressor needs to cool things down, you can stretch the battery for well over a day. For a typical outage that lasts a few hours to overnight or even a day, the Blackout Buddy has more than enough juice.
The USB-C connected remote monitoring screen is one of the best features of the 4Patriots Blackout Buddy. It’s a small LCD display that magnetically attaches to your fridge (or any metal surface), showing real-time battery level, power consumption, estimated runtime, and incoming solar power if you’ve got panels connected.
You’re not guessing how much battery is left or wondering if things are working. You glance at the screen and know exactly where you stand. It’s simple, intuitive, and genuinely useful, especially during an outage when you’re trying to conserve power.

The 4Patriots Blackout Buddy feels solid. It’s encased in brushed metal, weighs 34.6 pounds, and has a premium feel throughout. The cooling fans are quiet, the connections are secure, and everything feels built to last.
At 2.5 inches thick, it’s slim enough to fit in tight spaces, though “slim” is relative when you’re trying to wedge it behind a fridge. It’s not obtrusive if you put it on top of a fridge or mount it on a wall, but it’s also not invisible.

We didn’t test the solar panel compatibility during our review, but the 4Patriots Blackout Buddy has dedicated solar inputs and works with 4Patriots’ 100W and 200W panels. You can connect up to three 200W panels for a total of 500W solar input, which would recharge the unit in about 2 hours under optimal sunlight.
For extended outages where grid power isn’t returning quickly, solar charging lets you keep the Blackout Buddy running indefinitely. It’s a nice failsafe for worst-case scenarios.
One of the best features is expandability. You can connect up to four Blackout Buddy units for a total of 4,120 Wh of power. That’s nearly six days of fridge runtime on a single charge if you’re cycling efficiently.
For households with multiple fridges, freezers, or critical medical equipment, this modular approach lets you protect every essential device without running extension cords all over the house.

For our older fridge downstairs, the 4Patriots Blackout Buddy worked flawlessly. We simulated several outages by flipping the breaker, and every time, the unit switched over seamlessly. The fridge stayed cold, the display showed accurate battery levels, and we never once worried about food spoiling.
For our main GE Profile fridge upstairs? It was a dealbreaker. The 620W peak consumption exceeded the 600W limit, and the Blackout Buddy couldn’t handle it. We would have needed a different solution — likely the larger 4Patriots Generator 1200 or 2200X — to power that fridge.

You’ll probably be happy with the Blackout Buddy if you have an older fridge or standalone freezer that doesn’t pull more than 600W, and you want automatic backup power that requires zero effort during an outage. It’s perfect for people who travel frequently, live in areas with unreliable power, or just want peace of mind knowing their food won’t spoil. The automatic switchover, remote monitoring, and solar compatibility make it one of the smartest backup power solutions we’ve tested.
You might regret buying it if you have a modern fridge/freezer combo with an ice maker or other power-hungry features. The 600W limit is a hard ceiling, and many appliances will exceed it during peak operation. At $997, it’s expensive enough that you want to be absolutely sure it’ll work with your specific fridge before you buy. Also, if you need more than 2 AC outlets, you’ll be disappointed.
At $997 for a single unit, the 4Patriots Blackout Buddy competes with portable power stations like the Jackery Explorer 1000 ($999), EcoFlow Delta ($1,299), and even 4Patriots’ own Patriot Power Generator 1200 ($1,497). The Jackery and EcoFlow offer more power and versatility, but don’t have the automatic switchover feature. The Generator 1200 has more capacity and higher output, but costs more and isn’t designed for permanent fridge installation.
The Blackout Buddy fills a specific niche: automatic, hands-off fridge protection for lower-power appliances. If your fridge fits within the 600W limit, it’s a brilliant solution. If not, you’ll need more power.

The 4Patriots Blackout Buddy Emergency Power Supply is a genuinely clever product that solves a real problem — automatically protecting your fridge during outages. The installation is simple, the switchover is seamless, and the remote monitoring screen is incredibly useful. But the 600W power limit is a real issue for modern refrigerators, and at $997 for one, it’s an expensive gamble if you’re not sure your fridge will work with it.
If you’ve got an older fridge, a standalone freezer, or appliances that definitely stay under 600W, the Blackout Buddy is an easy recommendation. For modern, power-hungry fridges with ice makers and extra features, you’ll likely need to buy several or consider a higher-capacity solution.
The 4Patriots Blackout Buddy Emergency Power Supply retails for $997 (single unit) or $2,987 (3-pack); it is available directly from the manufacturer.
