Enya Cyber-G Pocket Review: The Fun, Folding Bluetooth Speaker You Can Actually Play

The Lowdown

At $199, the Enya Cyber-G Pocket isn’t exactly an impulse buy, but it earns its price with a unique combination of portability, ease of use, and just plain fun. It’s not meant to replace a traditional guitar or even a high-end Bluetooth speaker. But that’s not really the point. What it does offer is an easy and fun way to start making music right out of the box, whether you’re a complete beginner or just someone looking for a new musical gadget to play with. It’s compact, well-designed, and easy to pick up and enjoy in minutes.

Pros

  • Doubles as a Bluetooth speaker
  • Easy to play instrument
  • Fun for kids and adults
  • Includes a case

Cons

  • I’d like a printed song book

I can’t say I’ve ever wished for a Bluetooth speaker that doubles as a guitar. But I am always intrigued by gadgets that try to do more than one thing. The Enya Cyber-G Pocket is exactly that: part speaker, part instrument, and entirely unusual. Let’s take a closer look at how it all works.

What Is It?

The Cyber-G Pocket by ENYA MUSIC Global is a portable, folding music device and 20W Bluetooth speaker. It functions as a travel guitar and rhythm machine that allows anyone (kids and adults) to create and play music without needing to know/learn traditional music theory.

Design and Features

When you first take the Cyber-G Pocket out of the box, you might think it looks like an oddly shaped Bluetooth speaker. The speaker grill is on top with a strange paddle-shaped lever. I’ll talk more about that lever later.

On one side, you’ll find a multifunction dial that serves as the volume knob, sound preset selector, and power button. You’ll also notice that there’s a row of status LEDs that provide a visual reference to different modes and help you play songs through the app.

Flip the Cyber-G Pocket to the other side, and you’ll find a line-out/headphone jack, a USB port for charging, and a mode button that switches between solo and sing & play modes.

The entire device is constructed of plastic and is available in white, black, and pink. Guess which color I received. 😉

Using the Cyber-G As a Bluetooth Speaker

I’m not going to go into a lot of detail about using the Cyber-G Pocket as a Bluetooth speaker because there isn’t much to say. When powered on, it will be discoverable by your phone, tablet, or computer. Once paired, you can stream music to it. Audio quality is ok. It’s not going to blow you away or anything like that. It’s fine for casual listening. Ok, let’s get to the fun stuff…

Using the Cyber-G as a Musical Instrument

When you look at the bottom end of the device, you’ll think “what the heck is this”. It’s obviously a hinge, and when unfolded…

You now have a small musical instrument that is way smaller than a guitar… It’s more ukulele-sized, but it’s even smaller than a soprano uke (my favorite size, BTW). I’ve shown one of my ukes above next to the Cyber-G Pocket for size reference. The Cyber-G is 18 inches long, so it’s comfortable for adults and kids to hold and play.

The Cyber-G Pocket features a “fretboard” that they call the Chord Pad, where you hold down notes as you “strum” the Pick lever in the center of the device. While in the Sing & Play mode, the Pick will strum the first half of a rhythmic pattern when you press it once, and if you press it a second time, it will play the second half of the rhythm. If you pull the Pick in an upward motion, it will play an arpeggio, which is a note-by-note progression of the chord.

The silver bar between the Chord Pad and the Pick is the multifunction Touchboard, which you can use to switch between different rhythms. Watch the video below where I demo the various functions.

There’s a loop built into the top of the headstock/Chord Pad and a loop in the center/back of the Cyber-G. You can attach the included neck strap.

The Chord Pad doesn’t have physical frets, but it is separated into a 2×8 grid. The top 7 rows are for chords or notes depending on the selected mode, and the row closest to the silver bar is used to customize tempo for rhythm.

The surface of the Chord Pad has a soft silicone covering that provides a nice grip as you press and slide from note to note.

Sing & Play Mode vs. Solo Mode

The Cyber-G Pocket has two modes, Sing & Play and Solo. In Sing & Play mode, the instrument plays chords as you press the Chord Pad and strums with the Pick. The idea is that you play the chords and sing the melody/words of the song. The Solo mode lets you play individual notes. Do you have to be a singer to enjoy playing the Cyber-G Pocket? Not at all! I’m not a singer and can’t really carry a tune in a bucket most of the time. But I still enjoy playing this instrument in the Sing & Play and Solo modes.

The Enya Music App

The app allows you to do several things. You can use it to change the notes on the Chord Pad. By default, the instrument is set up in the C Major scale (C, Dm, Em, F, G, Am, and Bdim). But through the app you can change that if you like. You can also use the app as a music book to play songs.

The songs provide a Rock Band (remember that game?) kinda vibe, showing the numbers that correspond to the Chord Pad as the lyrics appear in the app.

As of now, there are a few dozen songs to choose from, but I hope they continue to add more over time.

Final Thoughts

At $199, the Enya Cyber-G Pocket isn’t exactly an impulse buy, but it earns its price with a unique combination of portability, ease of use, and just plain fun. It’s not meant to replace a traditional guitar or even a high-end Bluetooth speaker. But that’s not really the point.

What it does offer is an easy and fun way to start making music right out of the box, whether you’re a complete beginner or just someone looking for a new musical gadget to play with. It’s compact, well-designed, and easy to pick up and enjoy in minutes.

I’ve had a lot of fun with it, and I think it hits the mark for both kids and adults who want a low-pressure way to experiment with music. I just wish Enya included a printed songbook or expanded the app’s song library a bit more to help users get started even faster.

The Cyber-G Pocket retails for $199.00; it is available directly from the manufacturer and other retailers, including Amazon.
