Can a pair of Bluetooth wireless headphones that sell on Amazon for under $60 sound decent? That’s the question I brought with me when I began my review of the TOTU BT-2 V4.1 Bluetooth Headphones Wireless Music Stereo Sports Headset. While they have an MSRP of $99.99 you can get them for $40 less on Amazon.

The headphones weigh in at .6 ounces and come with a carrying case, a short USB to microUSB charging cord and a number of inserts so you can get a comfortable seal when placing the earphones into your ears.

The company claims that, “TOTU use the best material and brand new design to pursue both excellent appearance and high quality product.” That’ quite the claim from a company. This is especially the case because the TOTU BT-2 V4.1 have a rather large and unusual shape. Honestly, I didn’t expect much by way of comfort or sound quality. I ended up being surprised on both counts.

Let’s run down the lofty claims the company makes on the product page and add some commentary after using these for some time.

Incredibly Comfortable, Secure Fit – The flexible stabilizing ear hooks mold to your ears, so you don’t have to readjust them endlessly. Designed to stay in place and never fall out.

I smiled when I initially read this. You see, the TOTU BT-2 headphones have a permanently affixed ear loop that wraps around the ear in order to hold the earphones in place. They need to have this since at a time when most companies are finding ways to make the electronics connected to the actual earbud smaller and smaller, TOTU opted to have a large “box” connected to each earbud. That size alone means they have to have a good means of staying put.

To get a sense of just how big each of the two sides are, here’s a comparison shot with a wired earbud. And while I realize that comparing this, a wireless Bluetooth headset with wired earphones, this does give you a sense of just how big the headphones under review are.

image

Yeah, they are big. Here’s the thing though — they are remarkably light and surprisingly comfortable. Looking at the headphones I would never have guessed just how comfortable they would be. And, thanks to the earloops, they do indeed stay in place when wearing the headphones while active.

In addition, the large size means there plenty of room for nice controls that can easily be accessed while wearing the headset. So on the claim of “Incredibly Comfortable, Secure Fit” TOTU gets two thumbs up.

Amazing Sound Quality – Advanced APTX sound and Bluetooth 4.1 technology delivers astonishing acoustics. Noise reduction and Echo cancellation makes you won’t miss any important details of your phone conversation.

I’ll admit it — my work on Gear Diary has spoiled me. When I started with the site as a writer, I would review any and all headphones that were offered for review. Then I tried the “good stuff” and quickly came to appreciate that, like wine, spirits and cars, the more expensive models are usually more expensive for a reason. I started focusing more on mid-to-high end audio products and haven’t looked back. (I’m currently finishing a review of a pair of earphones that are just under $350 and sound like it!) That’s why I was so surprised by the sound the TOTU BT-2 put out. No, I would not call these audiophile-grade headphones but that’s not what they are striving to be. These are wireless headphones Designed for people who want to cut the cord while listening to music during periods of activity. For that they are fantastic and, in fact, thank’s to the combination of comfort and sound quality, I can see people opting to use these during non-active periods of time as well. So, on the claim of “Amazing Sound Quality” TOTU gets 11/2 thumbs up.

Feel Free to Break A Sweat – A thin layer of liquipel protects the headphones from moisture. This specialized substance is safe from accidental spills, splashes, and sweaty workouts.

This is an increasingly common feature on earphones intended for use during athletes. I haven’t done serious splash and spill tests but I have worn these for running and they did just fine. Since the company knows the use for which most people are buying these earphones I’ll accept TOTU’s claim that there is a thin layer of protection on the headphones and give the company two thumbs up here as well.

Stable Singal Connection and Durable Design – Latest CSR chipset guarantees solid performance within 10 meters operational distances. The long-lasting and rechargeable battery charges 1.5 hours, delivers up to 9 hours of playtime and 160 hours Standby Time.

I tried using the earphones from a distance and they seemed to do a good job of holding the signal. I also tried running down the battery and found the company claims to be pretty accurate. That means that, with the TOTU BT-2 earphones, you can charge them in nothing flat and then wear them while warming up, then running and then going on with a few more activities. It means I could, if I so desired, wear them on my flight to Israel next week and enjoy my music for almost the entire trip. I do wish they headphones took the leap and offered the 30 meter range we are beginning to see in some wireless headphones but those headphones cost significantly more than these. Additionally, due to the use scenario most will find themselves employing with the earphones I don’t see the additional range as being a deal breaker. So… As you might guess… On the claim of ” Stable Singal Connection and Durable Design” I’m going to give TOTU two thumbs up yet again.

In short, the TOTU BT-2 V4.1 Bluetooth Headphones Wireless Music Stereo Sports Headset live up to the claims made by the company quite well. As someone who loves high-end headphones and speakers I’m not sure I will see myself using these for anything other than running but I do highly recommend them. At their MSRP of just under $100 they are a decent value. At the current price on Amazon they are a great value and I don’t think you will be unhappy with a purchase of them. Check them out here.
