6-Foot WaterField Wag Dog Leash Review: Treat Your BFF to the Hand-Crafted WooferField Collection

The Lowdown

I’ve read some user reviews that complain that the WaterField Wag Dog Leash‘s Latigo leather handle is too thin, too hard, and too rigid. I literally just walked in from a two-mile walk with Nava, and I disagree. No, the handle isn’t a soft, malleable leather, at least not initially, but it is quite comfortable to hold, and it will stay strong as it softens over time.

Overall
4.5

Pros

  • Strong, 6′ leash
  • Reflective strips add safety when walking at night
  • Hardware is strong and coated for added longevity
  • D-ring is at the base of the handle for poop bags or a light
  • Made at WaterField’s San Francisco workshop

Cons

  • Some may be unhappy with the rigidity of the handle when it is new
  • Pricey

WaterField bags, backpacks, and pouches are some of my favorites. Pre-COVID, I carried something WaterField daily. Recently, WaterField has released a line of WooferField dog accessories, including the Wag Dog Collar, the Wag Hip Pack, and the Wag Dog Leash. I just got back from a walk with Goldendoodle Nava; here are my thoughts on the WaterField Wag Dog Leash.

WaterField Wag Dog Leash

Nava is just over 20 pounds and is approaching her fifth birthday. Since we got her, she’s had just two leashes. There was the thin, light training leash we used when she was a puppy, and there is a four-foot leash that we’ve used ever since. The 4-footer has been a good leash; it has an elastic section that dampens the impact of the leash on Nava when she needs a correction, which is handy.

By comparison, the WaterField Wag Dog leash is a full six feet, and it has no elastic. While I enjoyed the dampening by the elastic section that was given by Nava’s last leash, she really seems to enjoy the extra freedom and latitude that comes with a longer leash.

Here’s what WaterField has to say about their Wag Dog Leash:

This classic 6-ft dog leash combines durable materials and thoughtful features. A leather-wrapped handle provides comfort, all-brass hardware with PVD coating ensures strength and longevity, and nylon webbing with double-sided reflective threads enhances visibility in low-light environments. Taking your dog out is literally a walk in the park with the Wag Dog Leash!

The WaterField Wag Dog Leash is made from strong nylon webbing. It is one inch wide, and it has two reflective strips running the entire length. I love this added “safety” feature.

The handle is a loop of the webbing material wrapped in full-grain stitched Latigo leather.

The WaterField Wag Dog Leash comes in color choices of dark brown, cognac, and black.

I’ve read some user reviews that complain that the WaterField Wag Dog Leash’s Latigo leather handle is too thin, too hard, and too rigid. I literally just walked in from a two-mile walk with Nava, and I disagree. No, the handle isn’t a soft, malleable leather, at least not initially, but it is quite comfortable to hold, and it will stay strong as it softens over time.

Here’s a look at Nava’s first walk using the Wag Dog Leash.

The WaterField Wag Dog Leash’s hardware is made from PVD-coated brass. It is durable, and it resists corrosion; it also won’t scratch the floor if you let go of the leash, and it gets dragged around by your dog. The points where the leash attaches to the handle and D-ring have zigzag bar-tack stitching, which is designed to prevent rips and increase the strength of the leash.

At the base of the leather handle, a D-ring is coated in the same PVD. This gives the leash a unified appearance while presenting a spot to secure a poop bag holder or light.

All told, the 6-foot leash weighs 0.4 pounds. While the leash works just fine on its own, the company recommends pairing it with their Wag Hip Pack and Wag Dog Collar.

We have samples of each, and I will be sharing our thoughts on the other two products later this week. In the meantime, however, you can see the WaterField Wag Dog Leash and Wag Hip Pack in action in this promo video:
