3 Legged Thing Axis Strap System Review: Aerospace Technology Fused with Precision British Engineering

The Lowdown

The Axis Strap System is built on tested engineering and injected with the clever design and funky aesthetic that we expect from 3 Legged Thing. The Axis 44 and Axis Anywhere straps are easy to set up and customize as needed, replacing traditional straps with something much more flexible, useful, and attractive.

Camera straps just got a serious upgrade. Renowned British camera gear maker 3 Legged Thing is stepping into the carry solution arena with the debut of its Axis Strap System, now live on Kickstarter. In this review, we look at two the available straps, the Axis Anywhere and the Axis 44.The Axis Strap System

The Axis lineup offers a tailored solution for every style of carry:

  • Axis Pulse – A compact, ultra-sturdy wrist strap
  • Axis 24 / 34 / 44 – Sleek, supportive straps in three widths to suit everything from lightweight mirrorless cameras to heavy-duty pro rigs
  • Axis Sling & Twin Sling – Breathable crossbody comfort, with a dual-camera setup that converts to single-camera use in seconds
  • Axis Anywhere & Gatekeeper – Smart bag-mounting options that relieve neck and shoulder strain
  • QD4 & QD7 Plates – Arca-Swiss compatible quick-release plates with integrated QD sockets for seamless attachment

QD (Quick Detach) Buckle and Swivel

At the core of the Axis Strap System are two revolutionary components: the exclusive 4 Axis QD Buckle and a reimagined version of the classic QD Swivel. Originally engineered for use in astronautics, military, and law enforcement — and even trusted by NASA for securing cargo — this ultra-reliable quick-detach system has been redesigned by 3 Legged Thing to keep your camera secure, accessible, and always ready for action.

The rotating machined plug and socket, combined with the pivoting design of the strap latch, provide movement in all directions. The QD system attaches and detaches quickly and easily, and yet provides a strong and secure connection.

The QD plates work with any tripod heads that support the Arca-Swiss standard. In my case, I am using the QD plate with the AirHed Pro Lever.

Axis 44P (Padded)

Axis 44

The Axis 44 is the widest of the three available widths of this strap variant, and as this is the 44P model, it also comes with padding. My sample came in the anodized bright orange color with gray straps, which 3 Legged Thing refers to as Ember. It includes a QD4 plate. It features adjustable length straps and is made with Hypalon-reinforced stitching for long-lasting durability. The padding is a nice touch, especially if you are using the strap with your heavier rigs on long shoots.

The 4 Axis QD Buckle features a clever design that allows users to connect to the top or sides of the buckle. When combined with the adjustable length straps, this allows for multiple configurations to match your body shape and shooting needs. You can quickly reconfigure on the go, something that is not possible using most other systems.

Axis 44 (as well as 24 and 34) is available in Ember (anodized orange components with gray straps), Inferno (orange components with black straps), Moondust (black components with gray straps), and Obsidian (black components with black straps).

Axis Anywhere

3 Legged Thing Axis Strap System Review: Aerospace Technology Fused with Precision British Engineering

The Axis Anywhere strap uses a clever system of three interconnecting straps joined by X-shaped buckles. Users simply pull back the metal loop that provides closure to the plastic latch that connects to your camera backpack’s straps, slide it on, and lock it in place with the same metal loop. This is done on both sides of the backpack, and when it comes time for use, the photographer dons the pack and attaches the center strap to either side with the integrated X buckles.

The center strap features the same QD swivel as on the Axis-44 and allows full movement of the camera. It can be rotated in any direction and also slides along the center strap. The Axis Anywhere also features latches that allow for adjustments to the strap’s length, allowing users to customize the system to their preferences.

Axis Anywhere is designed to be easily removable by detaching the center strap from the X buckles on either end. This way, you can keep the end strap attached to your gear pack at all times and simply add the center strap and your camera when you are shooting. A very convenient setup indeed.

Axis Anywhere is available in Ember (anodized orange components with gray straps) or the more subdued Obsidian (black components with minor orange accents).

The Axis Kickstarter campaign kicked off on 9th September 2025 and runs for 31 days; 3 Legged Thing is planning for an April 2026 delivery.

The Axis 44P strap is available for a $93 pledge, and the Axis Anywhere strap for a $57 pledge. Both are currently available for backing on the Axis Strap System’s Kickstarter page.

Update April 28, 2026: The 3 Legged Thing Axis Strap System is now available directly from the manufacturer.
