If you’re looking for a pair of competitively priced over-the-ear Bluetooth headphones with great sound quality and excellent battery life, you should look no further than the SuperTooth Freedom. This comfortable headset connects to your phone, tablet, laptop, or PC using Bluetooth 4.0 technology and even has NFC connectivity if your device supports it. When I first put the SuperTooth Freedom headset on, I was amazed at how comfortable they were. The ear cups have thick padding covered by a soft, leather-like vinyl fabric that really hug your ear and help prevent wear fatigue. The headband is adjustable, and the ear cups swivel so that they will always fit well no matter who is wearing them. The underside of the top of the headband is also padded so it sits comfortably on top of your head.
The SuperTooth Freedom headset also has controls on the outside of the ear cups so that you can control your music wirelessly. There is a Play/Pause/Stop/Answer multifunction button on the bottom of the right ear cup that is used with music as well as phone calls. Oh, that’s right, the SuperTooth Freedom can also be used for phone calls. It has an omnidirectional microphone built-in so that you can take phone calls via Bluetooth as well as listen to music.
On the right ear cup there’s a microUSB jack that’s covered by a rubber flap, this is where you plug in the charger for your headset. There’s also a power button and volume button on the right ear cup. On the left ear cup there’s a 3.5mm audio jack that’s also covered by a rubber flap. This jack is so that you can listen to music using an included 3.5mm to 3.5mm audio cable in case your battery runs out or if you want to use the headphones with a device that’s not Bluetooth compatible. It’s a very nice option to have, just in case. The Freedom also comes with a handy carrying pouch that protects your investment while traveling or during storage.
One of the big selling points for the SuperTooth Freedom headset is its 15-hour battery life. That’s FIFTEEN hours. That’s a lot of playback time and it’s perfect for a long flight, drive, or just the added convenience of not having to charge it all the time. You can compare the 15-hour playback time to the leading headphones out there these days, which only give you 10 hours of playback time. Another neat option is the option to pair your headphones to your device using NFC or Near Field Communication. If your phone or tablet is compatible with NFC technology, you can just tap your phone to the headset and automatically connect. However, pairing via Bluetooth the normal way was extremely easy so it’s no sweat if you don’t have an NFC capable phone.
I tested the sound quality on the SuperTooth Freedom for a few hours, and I’ve got to say that I was impressed. The high notes rang crisp and clear while the low notes sounded deep and pounded through as the sound engineers intended. The mid-range sound was smooth and paired nicely with the highs and lows that the Freedom pumped out. Although I have not tested the high-profile Bluetooth headsets out there like Beats by Dre and can’t directly compare them, I would be surprised to hear sound quality too much better than I’ve heard from the Freedom headset. Let’s also not forget that the Freedom headset is over $100 less than the comparable Beats by Dre headset.
The competitive price and impressive sound quality of the SuperTooth Freedom add up to fantastic pair of stereo Bluetooth headphones. I recommend them to anyone who wants great wireless sound quality on a budget.
