There’s something special about seeing a child’s drawing, a favorite book character, or even your own goofy doodle come to life — but Budsies takes that idea and quite literally stitches it into a soft, huggable reality. If you’ve ever looked at a picture and thought, “I wish this was a plush toy I could hug,” this is your chance. The real question is whether it’s worth the price and the wait.
After going through the entire process — from submitting my daughter’s artwork to finally tearing open the package — I can confidently say there’s a lot to love here, but there are also a few things you should know before ordering.
What Is a Budsie?
A Budsie is a custom-made stuffed animal based on whatever design you submit. That could be your kid’s charmingly lopsided cat drawing, your Dungeons & Dragons character, your pet ferret, or even an inside joke that only your family will understand. Budsies became a bit of a phenomenon after appearing on Shark Tank (spoiler: the Sharks passed), and since then, they’ve reportedly made over 250,000 plushies for people worldwide.
Each Budsie is handmade, not mass-produced, which is part of the charm. The standard size is about 16″ tall — roughly the size of a medium throw pillow — but you can pay extra to “supersize” them up to 30″ if you want something truly statement-making. That alone sets them apart from your average stuffed animal: this is one-of-a-kind art turned into a keepsake.
The Ordering Process: A Test of Patience
Let me be clear: Budsies are not a click-to-cart-and-have-it-in-two-days kind of purchase. I placed my order on July 30th, and my Budsie didn’t arrive until September 22nd — just under eight weeks later. That may feel like an eternity in our Amazon Prime world, but when you remember that each Budsie is hand-sewn by a real person interpreting your design, it makes sense. This isn’t fast fashion; this is slow art.
If you’re planning to order one as a holiday gift, treat it like ordering a custom cake for a big event — you don’t call the bakery the day before and expect a masterpiece. I wouldn’t risk ordering later than mid-October if you want it in time for Christmas. The earlier you get in the queue, the less likely you’ll be biting your nails in December. If it’s approaching the holidays and you’re worried your Budsie won’t make it in time, a gift certificate option is also available.
The ordering process is refreshingly simple. You upload a photo of your drawing, pet, or character and fill out a description to help the designers get it right. This is where you can really have fun: if your monster is supposed to have one giant purple eye and a mischievous grin, say so. If your cat’s stripes are “more of a vibe than a pattern,” let them know.
Then come the upgrades, where you decide how extra you want to go. The most popular add-on is the $49 Sneak Peek + Design Guarantee, which gives you a preview photo of your plush before it ships and allows a few rounds of tweaks if something looks off. If you’re particular about colors or just want peace of mind, this is worth considering.
Other add-ons include a $15 Faux Fur Fabric upgrade for extra fluff, a $13 Heartbeat Insert that adds a sweet thump when you squeeze your plush, and a $25 Weighted Plush option that gives it a comforting heft — think weighted blanket, but cuddlier. For the go-big-or-go-home crowd, the $59 Supersize Upgrade increases your Budsie to 30″. A $6 Birth Certificate makes it feel like a true keepsake.
One underrated option is the $20 Redraw Service, which would be a lifesaver if your drawing is messy or too detailed for a plush. Budsies’ designers simplify it so it translates well into 3D form — especially helpful for fan art or intricate characters.
And if you don’t have your final photos ready, you can still check out and send them later. Throughout the process, you’ll receive email updates so you never feel completely in the dark.
My Budsie Experience
My Budsie is a character named “Towel Boy” that my daughter Sarah first drew in her late teens. He’s whimsical and cute, and I have a huge soft spot for him. When I was offered the opportunity to review Budsies, I asked her to draw him again so I could submit him.

World, meet Towel Boy.
One of the first steps in the ordering process is to include a written description of the drawing, so the designer understands exactly what you are looking for. Here was mine:
Towel boy consists of a large round head with two striped stems coming out of its top — one is quite long and the other is short. His green and white eyes are ringed in black, and he has a sweet, simple smile. His gray towel has large black stitching with a heart superimposed on the front where the ends come together. He has a slightly wide, huggable body. His arms come out of the sides of the towel, and his legs come out of the bottom; he does not have obvious hands or feet.
Disclosure: For this review, Budsies offered to cover the cost of a 16″ plush, including the $49 Sneak Peek + Design Guarantee option, plus the shipping costs. I requested an upgrade to the 30″ Supersized ($59) version and the Weighted Plus ($25) options at my expense. Including shipping, the total for my plush came to $289.90, which was paid for using a supplied reviewer’s code; I separately sent Budsies $98.95 via PayPal to reimburse them for the difference.
My initial order was placed on July 30th. On August 7th, I received an email from Budsies’ customer service with an attached color palette, asking me to select colors for my plush and enter them through the site’s interface.
Here’s what I submitted:
On August 8th, I received an email thanking me for being specific and saying that they would use the colors I had picked. That same day, I received an email stating that the Budsies lead designer had just reviewed and approved my design, and that two more designers would work on selecting the fabrics and crafting the shape of each individual piece of plush that brings my design to life.
On August 18th, I received an email stating that Budsies’ designers had just finished creating the patterns for my design and were now cutting those patterns from the various fabrics selected for my design.
On August 22nd, I received an email stating that my Budsies was complete, and since the Sneak Peek option was included with my order, I got my first glimpse of my design. I was given 96 hours to either accept the design or reject it with any minor tweaks I wanted, with the understanding that requested changes might delay production time.
The thing is that I couldn’t tell if Towel Boy’s eyes were black or green from the photo, and I disliked the symmetrical circles around his eyes, which resembled incomplete spectacles rather than his jaggedly ringed eyes from the original drawing. So I let them know, and they went back to work.
On August 28th, I received a follow-up email showing Towel Boy’s changes and once again asking me to either accept the design or reject it with changes. This time, I happily accepted.
On September 4th, I received an email letting me know that Towel Boy was going to be inspected and then wrapped up and sent to me.
Shipping takes a little longer than expected, though — I didn’t have my Budsie in hand until September 22nd, but he was definitely worth the wait.
What’s in the Box
When my Budsie arrived, it came in a cheerful mailer.
Inside was Towel Boy, safely wrapped, along with the copy of Sarah’s drawing that Budsies had used to create him.
Seeing him for the first time felt personal — like opening a gift that had been made just for me, because technically, it had.
Depending on your selected upgrades, you might also receive a birth certificate or a sound insert that plays a heartbeat when squeezed. These extras add personality — and cost — but they help make the plush feel even more special.
Design and Quality: The Plush Itself
Here’s the part where Budsies really shines. When I pulled mine out of the mailer, the first thing I noticed was how soft Towel Boy was. They use hypoallergenic polyester for both the plush exterior and the stuffing, and it feels exactly like the kind of quality stuffed toy you’d expect a child to drag around everywhere.
The stitching was neat, the proportions were right, and the colors were spot on. There was a tag on his hand and a materials tag sewn into his outfit, both of which were quickly removed. If the tag had been on the inside of his garment, I probably would have left it intact.
Because each Budsie is made by hand, there’s a touch of personality in each one; no two will look exactly alike, even if they’re based on the same drawing. That’s part of the charm. A Budsie isn’t going to be an exact one-to-one replica of your art like a digital print might be, but rather a plush interpretation of it.
Why You Might Want One
So who is this for? If you have kids, the answer is obvious; this is a way to preserve their artwork in a form that won’t just get lost in a drawer. Imagine handing them a plush version of the rainbow dinosaur they drew last summer and watching them realize that they made this. It’s a memory-making gift if there ever was one.
However, Budsies are just as much fun for adults. Want a plush version of a drawing your kid did for you, your company’s mascot, or that ridiculous cartoon you doodled on a napkin that one time? You can have it. There’s even a separate service called “Selfies” that turns people into plush characters, and another called “Petsies” that recreates your pets.
How It Compares to Other Options
There are a few other companies that offer similar services; for example, Plushify creates custom stuffed animal patterns from drawings, which, if you are crafty, seems way easier than trying to figure out how to do something like that on your own. With their service, you create the 3D drawing, gather the materials, and then sew the resulting pattern into your own plushie.
Don’t get me wrong; Plushify is a really cool service for those with the time to create the final stuffed toy product, but not everyone will have the necessary skills, much less the time to gather the supplies and put everything together. If you happen to have those skills, Plushify is absolutely an option worth considering.
Budsies, on the other hand, offers a turnkey experience; you receive a well-made, bespoke plushie from a simple drawing and your input given throughout the process. Budsies has been around for years; they have a huge library of examples on their site to inspire you, and their communication process feels professional.
That said, Budsies is not cheap. Prices start at $169 and increase rapidly with add-ons. As mentioned, my completed Budsie was $289.90 (including shipping) due to the add-ons I selected. However, when you consider that this is a handmade product, made specifically for you, it becomes more reasonable. It’s not a mass-market toy; it’s more like commissioning a small piece of art.
Things to Consider Before Ordering
Here’s where we need to have an honest chat. Budsies are not impulse buys; they start at $169 for a standard 16″ plush. The price goes up quickly if you start adding any of the available options, and by the time you’re done customizing, you could easily be spending as much as $300. For some, that’s a huge “no thanks.” Still, if you think of this as commissioning a piece of custom art rather than buying a toy, the price becomes more reasonable.
Then there’s the wait time, which is why I went into so much detail about the timeline in “The Ordering Process” section. If you’re the kind of person who refreshes a shipping tracker every hour, brace yourself. These are made-to-order by real humans, not churned out on a production line, and that takes time.
From July 30th to September 22nd, my order took just under eight weeks from start to finish. While I appreciated the regular email updates that kept me informed about the stage my Budsie was in, there were moments when I had to remind myself that good things take time. It also made me glad that I had started this process well before what will likely be a very busy holiday season.
Another thing to keep in mind is that, because each Budsie is handmade, there’s an element of interpretation. If your drawing is very abstract or has a lot of fine details, the artists will simplify it to make it work in plush form. That’s usually a good thing — nobody wants a stuffed animal with sharp angles or awkward proportions — but it does mean you should go in expecting a plush interpretation of your art, not a pixel-perfect replica. As you saw with my Budsie experience, the optional Sneak Peek upgrade can be helpful if you want to have approval and rejection options before receiving the final result. However, it adds time and cost, so it’s a tradeoff.
Finally, because these are handmade, no two Budsies will be 100% identical, even if you order two from the same drawing. That’s part of the charm, but it’s worth knowing before you place a multiple order for twins, triplets, or a matching set for all the cousins.
Should You Get a Budsies?
Budsies delivers exactly what it promises: a one-of-a-kind, high-quality plush version of your art, pet, or character that feels more like a keepsake than a toy. The materials are soft and durable, the craftsmanship is excellent, and the ordering process is transparent and surprisingly fun thanks to the steady flow of updates.
That said, this is not an inexpensive or fast experience. The price climbs quickly if you choose upgrades, and the almost eight-week turnaround requires patience — especially if you’re on a tight timeline. However, if you consider this as commissioning a custom piece of art rather than purchasing a mass-produced stuffed animal, the value becomes more apparent.
Budsies is worth it for milestone gifts, sentimental keepsakes, or anyone who wants to turn a beloved drawing into a huggable reality. Just be ready to budget a little extra and wait a little longer — this is “slow art,” but it’s worth the wait.
Retail pricing for Budsies Custom Stuffed Animals starts at $160; they are available directly from the manufacturer. Use code EARLYBIRD25 to get 15% Off Sitewide (including Specialty Commissions) until September 30th.
