There are many ways to secure your home yourself. Every company with a camera and an app can sell you a home security system. This is not where GEO-SWARM went with their home security plan. They, apparently, were deeply inspired by the movie Home Alone.
I know it sounds like we’re being sarcastic here, but seriously. Watch this video, and then tell me you didn’t hear “Keep the change, ya filthy animal” afterwards:
Ok. First of all, this is the exact drone Kevin McCallister would have used on the Wet Bandits. He would have loved being able to chase them around with a drone, making machine gun noises. Except his drone would probably have also dropped water balloons filled with paint.
However, this is real life, not a beloved Christmas movie. The GEO-SWARM is a real drone that can patrol your property and scare off intruders with a camera and speaker. It uses RTK to leverage GPS for location, so in theory it should be able to handle all sorts of weather and wind without accidentally spying on your neighbors.
So let’s break down the issues here. First of all, while it’s likely not illegal to blast fake shots at intruders, it will definitely get your neighbors’ attention. And there are laws around brandishing fake weapons in most states, and something tells me the police are not going to be thrilled with getting “shots fired” calls because of a drone. And that assumes that the police don’t also come in guns blazing. Or that your neighbors, or even worse, an actual intruder, don’t also start firing. And theirs won’t be fake sounds and will definitely be real bullets.
This isn’t the only issue. The idea of GEO-SWARM raises serious privacy concerns. Right now, you can’t really control whether your neighbor aims a security camera at your house. But if your neighbor’s drone is “patrolling the property,” it could just as easily be aimed into your bedroom. Sure, this is a risk with anyone with a drone, but again, this one can be programmed to come by under the guise of security.
This video feels like a parody, but it’s apparently a very real product. There’s no word on pricing, and not many details, really. Except that the lady in that video is really intent on chasing burglars around her property while cackling about “how we do it these days.” Not sure what that means, but if I go to someone’s house and I get greeted by a drone that makes the same shotgun noises as that 90’s sound keychain everyone had in middle school, I’m not sticking around to find out! Hey, I guess that means the GEO-SWARM does work to keep people away!
