Horow X70 Smart Toilet Review: It’s Far Smarter Than an Average Toilet

The Lowdown

The Horow X70 Smart Toilet brings luxury to the bathroom with adjustable bidet washes, a heated seat, warm-air drying, automatic flushing, and a splash-reducing foam shield. Its built-in tank and pump provide consistent flushing, while cleaning requires less effort. At $1,599, it’s a significant investment, and electrical work and professional installation added about $600 in this review. Incomplete remote backlighting, an overly sensitive automatic lid, and concerns about the feminine wash leave room for improvement, but everyday comfort and cleanliness make it easy to appreciate.

4.5

Pros

  • I love all the built-in features. We’ll ignore some since we don’t need them, but that’s okay

Cons

  • My wife has concerns about the Feminine Wash feature explained earlier

Back in 2020, a children’s book titled “Everyone Poops” came out—a fitting title for this review of the Horow X70 Smart Toilet with Built-In Tank and Pump. It’s far smarter than an average toilet, and far more expensive. Is it worth it, and can your budget handle it?

Design and Features

There is so much to the Horow X70 Smart Toilet that I will probably miss some feature or tech tidbit. My apologies. Let’s dive in, shall we?

First, there’s the price. At $1600 bucks, it’s expensive. And unless you live in a new house with modern features, that’s just the start.

Horow X70 Smart Toilet in bathroom

I’ll use our house as a typical example: a standard 1980s home with 2.5 bathrooms and updated 1.0 GPF toilets installed through a county program a few years ago. We’re on septic, and everything works as expected. When the X70 toilet review came up, I thought it would be fun to write this review for people considering a bathroom upgrade.

After ordering the Horow X70 Smart Toilet, it arrived in a large, heavy box that was parked in our dining room. That’s when I realized more money was needed. The second cost involved the X70 needing its own electrical outlet. No home from the 1980s will have an outlet installed near the floor next to a water appliance. Any electrician from back then would call that insanity. Well, times change, and we needed an outlet installed—next to a toilet and low to the floor. What could go wrong?

First, the X70 needed its own circuit breaker. It couldn’t be piggybacked onto another outlet. That would trip an existing breaker switch. Luckily, our master bathroom has its own circuit panel with an open circuit available. Otherwise, the electrician would have to crawl through the attic to connect to the main home circuit panel. A few days later, we installed the outlet.

Plumber truck

The third cost involved a professional installation of the Horow X70 Smart Toilet. Note that Horow supplies all necessary parts, along with complete instructions for the DIYer. The X70 uses a standard 12-inch rough-in. My handy-dandy brother suggested we install it ourselves. One look at the box made me reject that idea. It turned out to be a smart decision. We lined up a plumber who promptly came out—and realized it was a two-man job. A couple of days later, the crew showed up and got to work.

Removing the old toilet was easy. Fitting the X70 into place? Not so much. It wasn’t Horow’s fault. Our house is not normal. No upgrade seems to fit properly. The pros had to jerry-rig some piping behind the wall to line it up with the X70’s plumbing—something my brother and I would have botched. Kudos to the pros.

So after both the electrical and installation, we were down about $600—not including the Horow X70 Smart Toilet’s cost. As I said, Horow provides extensive installation instructions and templates—which our plumber used. If you have electrical and/or plumbing experience, these extra costs could be avoided.

Pouring in the anti-scaling liquid

Once the X70 was installed, it was time to set it up. That was the easy part. First, pour in a bottle of “Foam Shield” (supplied by Horow). When you use it, the foam sprays into the bowl as soon as it detects someone sitting on the seat. This helps prevent splashing and isolates unpleasant odors. It’s kinda cool how that works. The foam shield is good for 1000 flushes before needing a refill.

The Horow X70 Smart Toilet has a built-in water tank that delivers consistent flushing pressure regardless of household water pressure. Its powerful, quiet 43 dB pump helps prevent clogs. It also remembers your settings, so you don’t need to adjust them again.

Since the Horow X70 Smart Toilet is self-contained with its own pump, maintenance is explained thoroughly in the manual and easy to perform. This toilet requires less cleaning weekly than a normal toilet.

Horow X70 Smart Toilet controller

Once you’re seated and have finished your business, it’s time to grab the remote. At first glance, the remote can seem intimidating, but it gets easier with each use. Before I go into the remote functions, I have one complaint. Only some parts of the remote are back-lit. The text can be hard to read in a darkened bathroom. Horow needs to rethink backlighting the whole remote rather than just part of it.

Let’s quickly explain the remote’s functions. Note that these buttons are mechanical and NOT backlit. Left to right, top row first.

  • Flush: This is self-explanatory. You do not need to press Flush. The X70 automatically flushes when left alone after the lid closes.
  • Posterior Wash: After doing your business, press this to extend the cleansing wand that squirts water upwards towards your . . . bum. Water temp and pressure can be set and reset as you sit there until you feel comfortable.
  • Pulse Wash: This is a posterior wash, but it pulses the flow and moves the wand back and forth as it squirts water.
  • Foam Shield: The Foam Shield is sprayed as soon as you sit, but it can also be manually sprayed if you choose.
  • Open/Close Lid Seat: There are a few ways to open the lid; automatically (more on that later); manually; or pressing a button near the floor with your foot.
  • Stop: This stops everything, from washing to drying.
  • Feminine Wash: This is similar to Posterior Wash, but positioned more forward for traditional bidet function. Also, both water pressure and temperature can be controlled while in use. My wife has thoughts about this function later in this review.
  • H/C Massage: When this is pressed, the water temperature switches between hot and cold during any wash process.
  • Dryer: After washing, this blows air to dry off any wet areas. It can be set to move or remain stationary. Also, air temperature is adjustable.
  • Electrolyzed Water: When pressed, this performs a cycle of water purification.

The icons on this section of the remote are backlit. However, the text is not.

  • Nozzle Position/Air Position: The up/down arrows move the wand or dryer position for better “aim”.
  • ECO: If you wish to have the seat warm and ready at 86°F, turn this function on.
  • Water Pressure/Air Speed: You can set how much water pressure you want while using. You can also set the drying air speed.
  • Water Temp: There are 5 water-temp levels, from cold to quite warm. Warm will quickly spoil you.
  • Seat Temp: Again, there are 5 levels of seat warmth or cooling. It’s great for those cold days or mid-summer heat.
  • Air Temp: The dryer also has 5 heat settings, from cool to quite warm.

The X70 has a small set of side buttons on the bowl if you prefer not to use the remote. The four buttons are Stop, Flush, Feminine Mode, and Posterior Mode. You’ll feel a slight buzz as you run your fingers along the buttons, but it doesn’t indicate which function you’ve selected. Since they are out of sight and close to the shower glass, we ignore them and use the remote.

There are other, more specific settings, such as child mode and locking in certain settings. The manual explains these deeper settings well.

That first “squirt” may feel rude if you’ve never used a bidet. But with regular use, you’ll depend on it because it leaves you noticeably cleaner. Use a “normal” toilet again, and you’ll miss the X70. Does it eliminate toilet paper? No, but you’ll need far less.

Since the Horow X70 Smart Toilet is being used by both my wife and me, she has her own perspective on its daily use. Here are her thoughts:

  • The lid automatically rises when you’re within a couple of feet of it. Since we have a small bathroom, we quickly disabled this function as the lid kept rising and lowering as we stood at the sink. It was maddening.
  • Because the lid doesn’t rest against a traditional tank, don’t lean back on it. Proper posture is required when seated.
  • The toilet automatically flushes, but not 100% of the time. Sometimes you may need to flush from the remote. (Note: I did not have this issue)
  • The bowl seldom needs scrubbing. When you do scrub it, be careful not to move the nozzles, or you could be in for a rude surprise when you go to use them again. The wand is removable for extra cleaning, but we haven’t needed to do that yet.
  • Find a new place for your tissue box and anything else you kept on top of the tank of your previous toilet. You cannot store anything on top of this toilet.
  • The feminine wash nozzle operates from the back, not the front. If you’re not careful, this could cause fecal matter to spray onto your female parts, potentially causing a UTI.
  • The sudsy water obscures what falls into it. That can be a disadvantage if you’re tracking the color or quality of your urine or stools. You can turn off the suds function if you’re tracking for health purposes.
  • When you press the dryer button, the toilet flushes first, so be patient.

Using the Horow X70 Smart Toilet quickly became part of our daily routine. As with most feature-rich products, we tend to use the ones we like and ignore the rest. It helps keep our life simpler. 😉

Final Thoughts

Remember the Charmin slogan, Enjoy the Go? Well, this is much more enjoyable than plain ‘ole dry toilet paper. Yeah, it’s expensive, but after a few months of use, you will become spoiled by how much cleaner you feel after each use. Old-style wiping now seems so prehistoric. You have to ask yourself, what is that worth to you?

The Horow X70 Smart Toilet retails for $1,599.00; it is available directly from the manufacturer and other retailers, including Amazon.
