Need Proof Optical Media is Dead? Look at My Wife.

If ever you wondered if optical media (CDs and DVDs) is dead and gone this brief interaction from last night should make the point with utter clarity. A bit of background before the “blow by blow” Elana is not a techie. She’s not anti-technology either. As she often puts it, “I think this stuff is amazing and I appreciate what it can do but that is where it ends for me. I just can’t get excited about it the way you do.” But when it comes to the 11″ MacBook air she has been using for the past year and…

Madonna Finds an (Unfortunate) Way To Prove She is Better than Gaga in All Ways!

Lady Gaga has made quite a career as a Madonna clone, something that the Queen of Pop was fine to tolerate until she decided it was time to kick-start her music career again this year. At that point, emboldened by a general opinion that Gaga was a similar but lesser product than her, Madonna earlier this year referred to Gaga’s ‘Born This Way’ as ‘reductive’ – an accurate but nonetheless scathing term … especially in an age where computers with sophisticated software can dissect songs so easily to show their origins and similarities. Now, just one week after claiming the…

Ashley Judd Eviscerates the Gossip Industry

Gossip can be a very cruel phenomenon. There is reality, and then there is the truth according to viral videos, Facebook, Us Weekly, and the E! Network. Just this past weekend Sarah and I were in the grocery store, and she commented that the headlines screaming from the checkout magazines were just out of control and invasive. Did it really matter whether Kim Kardashian cheated on her (soon to be ex) husband? Do we really need to know the second Prince William and his wife get pregnant? So it makes me very happy to see a different kind of article…

Normincie’s Revolutionary Laptop Bag Review

I’m not much of a shopper, usually.  When it comes to clothes, the quicker I can get in and out of a store, the better, so far as I’m concerned.  Same with shoes, or cars, or appliances, or pretty much anything, really.  Although Judie has made some headway over the years in helping me to see the beauty of quality accoutrements for my gear.  Nice laptop bags.  Vaja cases for my iPhone.  Things like that.  But usually, I’m pretty immune. However, when I wrote up the news item for Finnish company Normincie’s new high-end laptop bags, I must admit I…

Facebook Buys Instagram for $1 Billion!

Soon after launching the Android version of the ultra-popular social photo sharing site, Instagram has just sold to Facebook for a cool $1 billion! Here are some details from the New York Times: Facebook has acquired Instagram, the popular photo-sharing application, for about $1 billion in cash and stock, the company said Monday. In a Facebook post, the company’s chief, Mark Zuckerberg, said he planned to build Instagram independently from the social network, allowing users to post on other social networks, follow users not on Facebook and opt out of sharing on Facebook. And from Instagram the following statement: When…

Jaguar XKR-S Convertible: The Big Cat Daddy in the Texas Hill Country

It’s been no secret that the convertible hot rod coupes from Jaguar have been some of my favorite cars to drive. Most recently I spent a week behind the wheel of the newest, baddest cat on the block, the XKR-S Convertible. Jaguar released the R-S series to stand above the already improved “R”-designate cars and I would volunteer that the “S” implies spectacular as that is what I found my driving experience in the big kitty to be. While the supercharged 550hp XKR-S in coupe form begs for track time, our tester convertible screamed “Road Trip” – and that is…

Motivational Poster for iPhone

You have all seen them, the posters with a black border and a motivational saying matching a pretty picture. I have no clue when or why these types of posters began, but they have been popular for some years now. These posters can be found to suit virtually any subject and are available with thousands of images. Using these posters for comedic reasons has also become popular if my Facebook newsfeed is any indication. Recently one of my buddies was laughing at one of these ridiculous posters and said, “I wonder how people make their own versions of these.” I…

Google Books Plans to Drop Independent Bookstores

Google books has never been a major player. They have a few fringe ebook readers, and they do have a few apps, but even on Android Google books is outclassed dramatically by the competition. I am very vocal about how much I dislike iBooks, but at least Apple packs the app full of features to give people incentive to try it. Google Books is so generic there is almost no reason to use it. Their biggest claim to fame was powering various independent bookstore’s ebooks, and Google has decided to end that program. According to Publisher’s Weekly: On Tuesday representatives…

Think Making a Promo-Video is Easy? Think Again.

If you think making a promo-video is easy, then you need to think again. What you see on TV, in the movies or even on You Tube has been sliced and diced in more ways than you can ever imagine. It also likely took five or ten or fifty takes to get the right words in the right places. Most of the time you’ll never see the outtakes except on a bloopers reel. And even then, the bloopers have been edited for effect. So what if we had a bloopers reel that proves that what can go wrong will go…

How the Helicopter Parents Stole Easter

Even though it has been 7 years, I remember it as if it was yesterday. My wife and I were Cub Scout den leaders for each of our kids, and we thought that a cool spring event would be an Easter Egg hunt. We had cleared it with all parents, and all of the kids were excited about the event. We allowed siblings to be involved, and my wife and I stayed up late packing eggs with candy so there would be about 12 or so eggs per child. We informed the kids and parents that each child should get…

Grab the Entire Synapse Magazine Archive Online for Free!

For so many magazines, unless you kept a copy for your archives the past is gone. Countless magazines and publishers have struggled and gone under in the internet era, and particularly in the latest economic downturn. So it is great when you find an online archive … and even better when it is a legitimate one set up by someone with a great history in the industry! Cynthia from Cyndustries has set up an online archive for Synapse magazine. Synapse was one of the big electronic magazines of the late 70s, though it faded away much sooner than Keyboard or…

Virtual City 2 Paradise Resort for iPad Review

I have already reviewed the original Virtual City on the iPod Touch, iPad and Android, and have also reviewed this sequel on the Mac. If you have read any of my reviews you know that I really enjoyed the twist on the SimCity gameplay. Now G5 has released the sequel, Virtual City 2: Paradise Resort for the Mac and PC. I’ve been playing for a while now and am ready to declare a new gaming love or if this one needs to go back to the zoning bureau! The Hype: New buildings, new product chains, new challenges! After winning the…

Using Tech for My Bible Study

I never really thought about it much, but I do something that for some who practice my faith, might be alien.  Much like my friend Dan, I use either apps or eBooks to do most of my Bible studies. Why It’s Better The app that I use the most when doing my Bible reading on my Android devices is Youversion.com; it’s also available for iOS.  I took to using it because I like to read from different translations.  Sometimes I will read the same verse in three different versions of the Bible, and  I can do this within seconds using a…

Would You Sell an Extra Organ for the Latest Tech?

I have no idea if the story I just read in the Telegraph is true or not, but supposedly there is a 17 year old in China who is suffering from a renal deficiency after selling his kidney to be used in an illegal transplant operation. He got 22,000 yuan (about £2200 or $3500) in the trade, which only sounds slightly better than a handful of magic beans; he used the money to buy a freaking iPad and iPhone. Supposedly his mom only found out about the crappy trade when she asked him how he got his shiny new gear….

Best Google Easter Egg Ever?

I love what Google does to have fun; just look at their April Fools stuff from this year.  But now they have what may be the best Easter Egg ever!  Just Google the Following and the egg you see above will be revealed. Google this(or just click it): 1.2+(sqrt(1-(sqrt(x^2+y^2))^2) + 1 – x^2-y^2) * (sin (10000 * (x*3+y/5+7))+1/4) from -1.6 to 1.6 I just hope someone spent their 20 percent time on this.  Hopefully they start spending some of it on Android, too. Happy Easter!

Americans Love Their Half Marathons!

It is no secret that I like running, and apparently, I am not alone! Running in the USA has looked at half marathon statistics for 2011, and the results are very interesting. Despite record levels of obesity in America, we are also seeing a push towards more fitness — just look at the popularity of apps and gadgets that track how far you walk, run or bike, or how many exercise themed apps are out there! And apparently, the half-marathon is the most popular distance! On the one hand, I am not surprised. Halfs are my favorite race distance too….

Plantronics BackBeat GO, the No Compromise Wireless Bluetooth Earbuds

This past Tuesday I had the opportunity to spend some time with representatives from Plantronics as they revealed their latest product — the Plantronics BackBeat GO. The Plantronics BackBeat GO offer “Great sound in a small package”. They speak the truth. The BackBeat GO are small, light and they sound great. Plantronics isn’t new to the world of stereo Bluetooth headsets. They have long offered the $79.99 BackBeat 903+ headset. The 903+ headset is designed for workouts and other activities. It is sweat-proof, has a stable wrap-around the ear design and is a very nice product. The company sent me home…

I Don’t Like Money-Grubbing Accessories, the Ham Radio Edition

I simply cannot stand money-grubbing accessories.  What is more money-grubbing than the weird connector on my handheld radio?  The above pic is of the headset connector for my Yaesu VX-7R. This radio is old but they still make it.  One unique thing about it is that it is submersible.  Yaesu had to use a different connector to keep the radio watertight.  They could have used something more standard, but they did not.  Only Yaesu makes headsets for this radio. What brought on my rant?  I forgot my headset at home this morning.

Teething Troubles for Tablet Adoption in the Workplace

It’s always tempting to impute Unlikely virtues to the cute. – Ogden Nash The tech world is abuzz with them, many of us own our own and several of us use them at work. They have transformed the personal computing landscape and become a standard in their own right, sized  from the neighborhood of 10″ down to 7″. I am speaking, of course, of tablets. Whether the Apple iPad, the varying Android builds, HP Touchpad or even the BlackBerry PlayBook, tablets have become very popular mobile devices and increasingly showing up in the business world. Before you start gallivanting off…

Which Ham Radio Should I Buy?

In my continuing series on the subject of Ham Radio, I’ll now attempt to answer the great unknown question: Which ham radio should I buy?? Well What do you Want to Do? In a lot of ways, this is almost the same as asking which phone one should buy.  The first question you should be asking isn’t which radio do you want to buy, but what do you want to do, or what is your goal?  Knowing what you want to do is important, because if you buy the wrong radio and try to do something it wasn’t really designed to do, you could get…
