This morning Alcatel OneTouch announced one of the most affordable LTE smartphones to date in the POP Astro. Interestingly named, the POP Astro will be exclusive to T-Mobile stores, and will be available online today for $0 down, and $6.24 over the course of two years, which is less that $150.
The good thing about the Pop Astro is that just because it’s a budget smartphone, it still delivers some very good specs for a mid-tier device.
Powered by MediaTek’s latest quad-core LTE processor, which is also the first of such in North America, the Astro is also VoLTE compatible which comes in handy with it’s HD Digital voice for crystal clear calls. And of course the device is Wi-Fi ready. The 4.5-inch qHD 960 x 540 pixel display, on top of the 1.5GHZ processor, is great for anyone who refuses to break the bank for a quality phone.
“Alcatel OneTouch and T-Mobile have built a strong partnership by offering great looking, high-quality, affordable devices like POP Astro to our customers,” said Steve Cistulli, Senior Vice President & General Manager of North America for ALCATEL ONETOUCH. “We’ve been committed to bringing more affordable LTE devices, such as the POP Astro, into the hands of customers, further democratizing smart mobile technology and giving budget conscious consumers better choices in their smartphone experience.”
The follow up to the Fierce and Fierce 2, it will include Android KitKat 4.4 OS right out of the gate, a 5MP rear-facing camera, and a VGA front-facing camera, 1GB of RAM with 4GB of storage (with the option to expand to 32GB with MicroSD). The 2000mAH battery packs in about 8 hours of talk times and 250 hours of standby which is great for a phone for this price.
“With the launch of the Alcatel OneTouch Pop Astro, MediaTek has proven its LTE readiness for the U.S. market,” said Mohit Bhushan, GM and VP of U.S. Business Development for MediaTek. “This ensures consumers have greater choice as we work with our OEM partners, like Alcatel OneTouch, to put premium technology in the hands of everyone, everywhere.”
