FreedomPop Teams Up with Basketball Legend Julius Erving to Bring Attention to Its Senior-Focused Wireless Service

Since its launch in 2011, FreedomPop has offered budget-friendly wireless service everywhere, from Target and Walmart to the internet. But now, they’re exclusively catering to seniors, a move they believe is long overdue. To bring awareness to their service and its features, they’ve teamed up with basketball icon Julius Erving, also known as Dr. J, in their latest campaign targeting seniors.

In case you didn’t know, Dr. J has had a legendary career: three scoring titles, three MVP awards, two championships in the ABA, and eleven NBA All-Star appearances. With a total of 30,026 points, Erving ranks among basketball greats like Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant.

Seniors often live on limited incomes and deserve a higher level of customer care. I turned 74 last month, and as a senior myself, I’m proud to team up with FreedomPop. – Dr. J

For just $10 a month, seniors can enjoy unlimited talk and text on a nationwide 5G network, thanks to FreedomPop’s revamped offerings tailored for the older demographic. FreedomPop recognizes that not everyone can easily visit stores for upgrades or fixes, so they offer personalized assistance from the comfort of seniors’ homes.

We’re particularly proud that our customer service representatives are trained to pick up the phone in two minutes or less and guide seniors through our specially designed easy-to-switch process. – FreedomPop CEO Joshua Gordon.

FreedomPop uses the GSMA network to offer coverage in North America and Puerto Rico; they say that if your unlocked phone works with AT&T, it will work with their service. You can check out their coverage map by clicking here.

Two plans are being offered: $10 per month plus taxes and regulatory fees for unlimited calls and texts with 1GB of data at 5G+ speeds (throttled after 1GB) or $30 per month plus taxes and regulatory fees for unlimited calls and texts with 10GB of data at 5G+ speeds (throttled after 10GB).

  • 4 minutes of a YouTube music video uses ~20MB
  • 10 minutes of streaming music on Spotify/ Pandora uses ~15MB
  • 15 minutes of Facebook uses ~10MB
  • 10 minutes of Google Maps uses ~6MB
  • 100 emails sent/ received with no attachment uses ~2.5MB
  • 10 emails sent/ received with attachments use ~18MB
  • 50 web pages/ 30 minutes of browsing (mostly text) uses ~15MB
  • 1 song (streaming) uses ~5MB

If seniors already have an unlocked GSM 4G LTE or 5G smartphone or flip phone, they can get a FreedomPop SIM for $10 and choose whether they want the $10 or $30 per month plan.

If they are on an Android phone, it must be running Android 4.1 or a more recent version; iPhones must be running iOS 8.0 or a more recent version. Those system requirements are based on the needs of the FreedomPop mobile application.

For calling and texting, they’ll have to use the FreedomPop Free Talk and Text application if they are on an iPhone or the FreedomPop Messaging application if they are on an Android phone.

If they don’t already have an unlocked and compatible phone, FreedomPop also offers several iPhone models they can buy outright.

With an iPhone purchase, they’ll receive a complimentary first month of service when they sign up for FreedomPop’s 10GB Unlimited Talk and Text plan. After the initial month, they’ll be charged the monthly $30 per month rate.

FreedomPop notes that they offer free global texting with all monthly texting plans. “Nationwide long-distance included from within the 50 states, Puerto Rico, and U.S. Virgin Islands.

Calls from the 50 United States to other destinations, including Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, may be considered international long-distance calls and rated accordingly.”

FreedomPop plans see users saving an average of 50% or more per month and lets them keep their phone number. The senior community is important to me—and FreedomPop gives them a way to stay connected to their family and friends while saving money. –  Dr. J

If you are a senior or you have one in your life who is looking for a way to save money that doesn’t involve giving up access to smartphone data or being able to stay in touch with unlimited calls and texts, you might want to point them to FreedomPop.
