Mophie’s New Powerstation Lineup of External Batteries Has Something for Every Need

Phones and tablets have become increasingly powerful. Sadly, the batteries powering them have not improved dramatically. They have certainly not kept pace with increases in processing power or screen size. Thankfully, mophie’s new line of powerstation universal external batteries will keep your mobile device running. With four different available capacities, there’s a battery for every need!

Mophie describes the new line of powerstation universal external batteries this way:

Your Everyday Portable Power: The powerstation lets you charge your devices from just about anywhere with a push of a button. A convenient USB-C input/output port means you can charge the powerstation and then use that same port to charge a device.

The four batteries in this line offer different capacities but share the same DNA. Each is small and light enough to carry anywhere although, as you might expect, the batteries with greater capacity are also larger and heavier than the ones that offer a lesser battery capacity.

Each has a USB-C port that is used not only to rapidly recharge the battery but delivers a lightning-fast charge to compatible devices.

Also, each has at least one additional USB port so you can charge more than one device at a time.

Each comes in a fabric finish that looks great but also makes it easy and comfortable to hold. The fabric serves an additional purpose though and prevents the scuffs, scratches and fingerprints that collect on the finished plastic surfaces most external batteries have. And finally, each of the batteries includes a series of four LEDs so you will always know how much charge remains in the batteries.

In short, all of the batteries in this new line share these features:

  • Versatile USB-C Port: Use the USB-C port to recharge the powerstation in record time or use that same port to charge a device.
  • Compact and Convenient: The lightweight, portable powerstation easily fits in your bag so you can always have a boost of power wherever you go.
  • Charge Multiple Devices: Charge multiple devices at once by plugging one device into the USB-C port and another into the USB-A port.
  • Stylish Fabric Finish: A premium fabric finish adds style and prevents scuffs and scratches.
  • LED Power Indicator: The integrated four-light LED power indicator displays charging status and the current battery life, so you always know how much power you have left.

So what are your options if you are looking to get one of mophie’s new batteries?

Mophie Powerstation XXL (Fabric)

First up is the grandaddy of the line. The mophie powerstation XXL has a 20,000mAh battery, Priority+ Charging, a USB-C port input/output port for fast-charging the battery and two additional USB-A ports for charging additional devices. That means you can charge three devices at once!

There’s no question this is a sizable battery. It measures 3.05 x 6.26 x 0.91 in and weighs just over 15 ounces. That’s a lot to carry, but if you need to make sure you are always able to use your mobile devices the extra weight is probably worth it.

The $69.95 battery delivers up to 73 hours of extra time the charging a cellphone, up to 27 hours of extra time to small tablets and up to an additional 17 hours if you are charging a larger tablet like my iPad Pro. The powerstation XXL is only available in black. You can check it out here.

Mophie Powerstation XL (Fabric)

If you need something slightly smaller, you might want to check out the $59.95 mophie powerstation XL. It has a 15,000mAh battery and sports the same three ports. The USB-C input/output lets you charge the battery quickly and then turn around and quickly recharge your phone. Like its slightly larger sibling, it also has two additional USB-A ports so you can charge up to three devices at a time.

It is slightly smaller at 2.85 in x 5.51 in x 0.63 in and, as you might expect, weighs a bit less at just shy of 12 ounces. Does that 3-ounce difference matter all that might? That depends on what else you are carrying and your tolerance for lugging around the additional weight.

Because the battery is slightly smaller than the power station XXL, the power station XL “only” provides an addition 55 hours of runtime for phones, 20 hours of additional time for small tablets and 10 hours of extra time for larger tablets. The mophie powerstation XL is available in black or gray You can check it out here.

Mophie Powerstation (Fabric)

If you want something a bit smaller and less expensive you might want to check out the mophie powerstation. This $49,95 battery has a 10,000mAh battery and provides up to 36 additional hours of runtime for phones, 13 hours for small tablets and an extra 8 hours if you are recharging a larger tablet. That’s certainly less than you’ll get from the power station XXL but this batter is just 2.83 in x 5.47 in x 0.63 in and weighs just 8.29 oz. That makes it an ideal battery to throw in your bag and forget about until you need it.

It has the same USB-C input/output port as its larger siblings but only has one additional USB-A port. That’s not an issue for most people, but if you do need to charge a phone, watch and tablet at the same time while traveling the lack of that extra port might be an issue.

It is available in four colors, including black, navy, gray, and pink. You can check it out here.

Mophie Powerstation Mini (Fabric)

Finally, if you want a battery that us under $40 and is so light you can forget you have it until the need arises you might want to look at the powerstation mini. This 5,000mAh battery is just 2.72 x 5.12 x 0.43 in and weighs 4.59oz.

Despite its small size, the powerstation mini will still give you an additional 18 hours of runtime if you are recharging your phone, 6 hours of extra time if you are using a small tablet but just four extra hours if you are recharging a large tablet.

It has the same configuration as the slightly larger powerstation meaning it has the same USB-C input/output port and a single USB-A port. But while it is smaller and packs less punch than its larger siblings, this battery is available in five different colors including black, gray, navy, pink and light blue. The various colors combines with the fabric material covering the batteries means they not only get the job done but look great too. You can check it out here.

Mophie’s new powerstation line is great for a few reasons. First, even the most expensive of the batteries is still under $70. When you consider how much you spend for batteries with much smaller capacities just a few years ago you can’t help but like the current pricing.

In addition, each of the batteries lets you charge at least two, and sometimes three, devices simultaneously. That’s a big deal when you consider that, in 2019, few people carry just a single device that requires recharging. And while some might consider it a bummer that the batteries don’t have any charging tips built into them, since we are still in the Wild West of different devices requiring USB-A, USB-C, micro-USB or Lightning connectors, by opting to not include cables mophie guaranteed these batteries would be truly universal. Mophie did, however, include a USB-C to USB-A cable with each battery so you can charge it. After that, however, cables are up to you.

The fabric material used in the construction of the batteries not only looks good, but it adds to the durability of the products too. Most of all, however, I love that there is a battery for everyone. If you want something with color, you can look at the smaller of the four batteries. If you are taking a long trip or have multiple power-hungry devices, you can look at the larger of the devices. If you need something in-between… mophie has you covered there too.

Having written that, there are a few caveats worth noting. First, as previously discussed, the batteries don’t have any built-in cables. If you aren’t careful, that could mean you have a fully charged battery but no cables to transfer the charge from the battery to your mobile device. That might sound silly, but it happened to me last month, and I can’t imagine I’m alone. In addition, we have entered the world of Qi wireless charging in a big way, but these batteries don’t take advantage of the fact that many of us have a phone and earbuds that are Qi-enabled. If that is a concern for you, let me suggest you check out the mophie powerstation hub I reviewed last week.

Mophie has done a nice job with this new powerstation line. There’s something for everyone, and you can get a battery that is reliable, backed by mophie’s years of experience and will just work. I trust mophie products and recommend checking these batteries out before your next trip. Learn more and order yours here.
