As legislation to legalize medicinal and recreational cannabis moves forward in numerous states, and as CBD use continues to explode, new technologies for consumption are coming to market. The Omura Series X is a sleek device that heats, rather than burns, whole flower herbs with impressive results. It reenvisions the entire vaping process and looks like something Apple would release.

The Omura Series X is the second generation of “heat not burn” devices from Omura. It is part of a “closed system” that uses special “Flowersticks” to create a seamless, clean and easy process. The Omura Series 1, the first device the company released. It is still available for just $49.99. It is an impressive device but the new device, the $99.99 Omura Series X, is even more refined and easier to use.

The Omura Series X Vaporizer

Omura’s X vaporizer truly elevates the cannabis space with its sophisticated approach to design. Working with the British-born Hong Kong-based industrial designer Michael Young – the mind behind the revolutionary electric ferry boats and carbon fiber chairs – Omura’s newest product launch is reminiscent of the work of Natao Fukasawa in its minimalism and subtlety. The perfect purchase for the fashion and art aficionado in your life. This first-to-market device features a patented dual heat source that preserves the healthy terpenes that typically get “burned off” in the smoking process. The device powers on for three minutes at a time to ensure safe dosing and users can enjoy up to 6-8 sessions before the battery needs a recharge.

Available in your choice of Gold, Quartz, Slate, and Jade, the vape has no buttons or moving parts. You’ll find the Omura Series X, a charging stand with a matching finish, and a USB-C charging cable in the box. The Omura logo is embossed on one side and sits just above a series of three LEDs.

The company explains that the new Series X has a “dual heat source oven” that “uses Heat-not-Burn technology to gently heat the whole flower through a patented heat curve.”

Omura Series X Flowersticks

But how, one might wonder, does the Omura Series X work if there are no buttons to turn it on or off, let alone change the temperature? The answer comes in the form of the Flowersticks, the second half of the Omura “system.” Flowersticks are prefilled cardboard tubes and come twelve to a pack.

CBD-filled Flowersticks range from $20 to $30 and are available from several different companies and in several different formulas.

For example, Oriel CBD comes in formulas that include Relax, Calm, Active and Balanced. Each stick has .125 grams of flower.

One of the first whole flower hemp brands to use an exacting balance of herbs to fine-tune hemp rich in CBD’s potential – powered by Omura’s Heat-Not-Burn technology. Our mission? Uncovering a purer and more precise experience, without getting you high. Whether that’s for unwinding at the end of a long day, getting ready for your favorite workout or enjoying a little me time, wellness is so much more than the sum of its parts.

Each formula has a slightly different “recipe,” so you can pick the formula that meets the moment.

Libertine CBD is another brand that offers many different formulas. These include Lifter, Midwest Monster, Sour Space Candy, and Suver Haze. They describe the line this way:

Libertine has four unique strains, each referring to the hemp flowers particular variety. Our flower is cultivated by master growers and is crafted to maximize the cannabinoid and terpene content for your elevated enjoyment. Strains can have different tastes and can produce different effects. But all of our strains are made with the same high-quality standards of 100% Full Spectrum Whole Flower and proudly grown in the USA.

Using the Omura Series X Vaporizer

Using the Omura could not be easier. Once the device is fully charged, it is simple to do thanks to the included charging stand; you take the device from the stand, pick out a Flowerstick and push it into the Omura X with the flower side down. The Omura Series X will gently vibrate to tell you it is on.

After a few seconds, you will feel the device get slightly warm. A few seconds later, it vibrates again.

This is the indication that the Omura has reached the proper temperature. From there, you gently draw on the Flowerstick. The vapor is not as thick you might expect, but the company explains it’s to be expected as it was designed for indoor use where minimal vapor and no lingering smell are welcome.

Our proprietary technology known as our heat curve gradually heats the flower throughout your session without combusting. The result? Complete activation of all the terpenes, cannabinoids, and other goodies CBD has to offer.

Sessions last about three minutes, and the heat profile warming the flower automatically changes over the course of the session. At the end of a session, the device vibrates once again and automatically shuts off. After that, it is as simple as removing the spent Flowerstick, throwing it in the recycling bin, and pacing the Series X back on the charging dock.

There are several different advantages of this Flowerstick approach. It offers specific dosing, is simple to use, and causes a minimal mess. At the same time, you WILL pay a premium for the “privilege” of using Flowersticks, but that’s the cost of convenience. And when you factor in the experience’s consistency, the premium price tag makes a bit more sense.

We’ve been impressed with the Omura Series X. Our first review sample experienced some inconsistencies, but the company was amazing about replacing it and the second unit works just as promised. The convenience aspect of the Omura Series X is definitely a major selling point. Being able to pull out a Flowerstick and, less than a minute later, draw from it is rather slick. And the range of brands and formulas is already quite extensive.

CBD Flowersticks are widely available but, at this time, only California residence can get the cannabis-filled Flowersticks. Unfortunately, Omura doesn’t sell empty Flowersticks. That would be nice since it would allow consumers to fill them with their choice of dried herb. However, it would not fit with a business model that, we suspect, depends far more on Flowerstick sales than device sales. After all, no-one needs more than one Series X, but fans of the device will quickly become repeat Flowerstick customers.

Here’s a promotional video that offers a better sense of the entire system.

The Omura Series X flower vaporizer is an entirely new approach to dry herb vaping. It is earlier to use than many of the other vaporizers we’ve reviewed. It looks great. It has no buttons or temperature dials with which you need to fuss. And the Flowersticks are available in a range of flavors and formulas. It is a great vape for those who rely on CBD. For those lucky enough to live in California… it offers much more.
