There are times when you want to keep an eye on your food, but you’ve got a ton of other stuff going on. Maybe you’re cooking a side dish or playing with your kids. That’s where the Yummly Smart Thermometer comes into play; it takes all the guesswork out of cooking, and it retails for $129.99.

Yummly Smart Thermometer

The Yummly Smart Thermometer is a small wireless probe that can be left in your food while you multitask and take care of other things. The Yummly smartphone app (available from the Apple App Store and Google Play) will keep track of your food and alert you when you need to take action. The thermometer can handle ambient temperatures up to 572 degrees Fahrenheit and measure up to 210 degrees Fahrenheit in your food.

The Yummly app has assisted cooking programs with temperature presets for many different types of meats, including beef, lamb, pork, fish, and poultry. The app also has integrated timers, notifications, and alerts to let you know when you flip your meat or when it’s ready to come off the heat.

The dock for the smart thermometer connects to your WiFi network, while the thermometer itself connects to the base via Bluetooth. The dock needs to remain within about 5 feet of the thermometer while cooking to have the app track your status. The base itself takes two AAA batteries that charge the wireless probe when put away inside the base. The wireless thermometer itself can run up to 25 continuous hours of cooking.

What’s really nice about the Yummly Smart Thermometer is that it has two temperature sensors; the first measures the temperature inside your food, the other measures the temperature inside your cooker. This way, you can also keep track of the grill temperature to ensure you didn’t run out of gas on your grill, for instance.

The charging dock is also magnetic, making it easy to bring with you out to the grill or keep on the fridge if you’re cooking in the oven in the kitchen. Yummly seems to have really thought about their product here with these nice features.

The app is really easy to use, which makes the cooking experience a real delight. There are many great options, including beef, lamb, chicken, salmon, turkey, duck, pork, and more. It was simple to choose your food, confirm your doneness, and get cooking. The Yummly app walks you through each step of the recipe, so you don’t miss a beat. It’s a real lifesaver if you’re doing multiple tasks at once.

We cooked salmon to test our Yummly smart thermometer, and the process was enjoyable. I was notified when to take the salmon off of the grill, and the salmon was cooked perfectly. Honestly, I think that these smart thermometers with smartphone app companions are the wave of the future for cooking. While, yes, if you’re an experienced cook, you shouldn’t need this; however, this is great for beginners or busy families with a lot on their plate who want to cook dinner while managing kids, work, life, etc.
