Videos of Blues and Rock Legends Performing ‘American Songbook’ at the White House!

Next Monday PBS is airing a concert event from the White House on February 21st that has already gotten considerable coverage due to President Obama singing a chorus of ‘Sweet Home Chicago’. But there was much more in the event hosted by the First Lady, and some of the stars playing are true musical legends including Jeff Beck, B.B. King, Buddy Guy, Booker T. Jones, Mick Jagger, Gary Clark Jr., Warren Haynes, Susan Tedeschi, Derek Trucks and more. I wanted to highlight a couple of clips from the PBS YouTube channel and other YouTube users. Here is the classic ‘Five…

I Prefer Amazon’s AppStore to the Android Market and Apparently I’m Not Alone

Do you want to know my #1 pet peeve with the Android Market? How unnecessarily difficult they make switching devices. I upgraded to a new Droid 4 last week and I STILL don’t have all of my apps set up yet. Contrast this with Amazon, where all of my apps were all ready to reinstall as soon as I logged into my account. The basic problem is that the Android Market doesn’t track apps for your account unless you spend money on them … which is perhaps the most idiotic thing I have ever heard about. This means trying to…

Paris Hilton Releases New Music Video to Make You Appreciate the Greatness of Rebecca Black

… or, at least that is how it seems. Paris Hilton had a amazingly dreadful album a few years ago that made people realize that no amount of money can buy you talent, and apparently it also can’t buy good enough taste in producers or songwriters to put together something reasonable. Welcome to 2012 and the new release from Paris Hilton just a couple weeks after the one year anniversary of Rebecca Black’s Friday. And while many call that song the worst ever … this one makes Friday look like genius. The song is bad enough, but the video is…

Flowchart Helps You Decide If You Should Send That Email (Hint: No)

Across the last two companies I have worked for the past 20 years, I have taken about 10 email etiquette courses and refreshers. There are loads of rules about whether or not to send, who to include, what to say and how to say it, and when to just step away from the computer and make human contact. Now we have a flow chart that will help any home or business user make that decision. And not surprisingly for anyone who has taken one of these corporate email classes … in most cases the answer is ‘NO’! Here is the…

The Beatles Allow Us to Once Again Pay Full Song Prices for Ringtones on iTunes!

I have frequently said that it feels like after Apple showed the potential for a new path in which the carrier worried about signal and the device maker worried about the phone, Android has ushered us back to the ‘bad old days’ in terms of carrier bloatware, handset makers skinning away the performance of their hardware to ‘differentiate’, no two handsets alike that kills accessories (thank goodness for the EU and required micro-USB chargers!), and so on. Apparently Apple felt left out and decided to bring us back to over-priced ringtones! While not as egregious as the ‘$12 5-pack bundle’…

Twusic Provides the Tools to Track Music Over Twitter!

Have you ever seen someone post a ‘now listening’ Tweet with the #nowplaying hashtag? It is a cool thing, but if your Twitter feed is anything like mine then those posts come and go before you get the chance to make note if you are on the go. This is where Twusic enters Here are some details: After being the first social network offering to all the tools to create their own radio for free, Twusic has now become a complete music application enabling users to create playlists, to follow the music of their friends and to discover all the…

Microsoft Pokes Fun at Google Apps with New ‘Googlighting’ Spot

Last year Microsoft created the ‘GMail Man’ spoof commercial (I’ve included it at the bottom), that cast things that are completely true — that Google has programs that ‘read’ your email and target you with advertisements based on keywords found in your messages — in a completely creepy way by personalizing the scanner. The intent was obvious – show personal and especially business users that their sensitive personal data and intellectual property was anything but safe in GMail.

Green Day Enters the Studio to Make a New Record and Shares Some Videos

Last we heard on Twitter from none other than Billy Joe Armstrong himself that Green Day had entered the studio to start recording their new album: Happy Valentine’s day! Officially started recording the new record today. It’s F*CK TIME!!!! My wife has been a huge fan since the early days, but I have to confess that my older son became so obsessed with the group a few years ago that I still can’t listen to their stuff anymore. But they are still a popular group with my family … and we all hope they manage to do better than their…

The Dismal State of Android as a Music Production Solution

I took the picture above on New Year’s Eve, and I was originally planning to use it as part of a post illustrating how an iPad-centric music system costing under $1000 is capable of producing better music than multi-million dollar studios from just 25-30 years ago. So let’s take a quick look: My son Christopher is working a DJ mixer which is interfaced to a netbook that is streaming music from MOG; an iPod Touch with some other pre-recorded music; and an iPad. The iPad is the workhorse of the music system, located just to the left of the iPod…

Oops They Did It (and were caught doing it) Again …

The quote I have been seeing – and using a lot lately is critical in describing Google’s behavior working around browser security settings and the very desires of users in insinuating their advertising into Safari as they were caught doing last week: Despite being thought of as a tech company, Google is actually an ad agency. Last week Google was caught bypassing user settings and Safari security as noted here: – Google secretly developed a way to circumvent default privacy settings established by a hated competitor, Apple – Google enabled this workaround to further its own advertising (revenue) and social-networking…

The Difference Between a Rock Guitarist and a Jazz Guitarist

This week on Facebook there are loads of those ‘what I do, what friends think I do, what my parents think I do …’ picture collages going around. Some are funny, some simply try too hard. There are always a bunch of comments which I can summarize to save you time:  “haha … so true”. (you’re welcome) I caught this one on a guitar-centric site this week, and what was amazing was not so much the image, which is just another mildly amusing stereotype at play, but the discussion. If you look at the core of the image, there are…

Skrillex Unleashes Music Video for New Single ‘Bangarang’

While Skrillex didn’t win the ‘Best New Artist’ Grammy, I doubt many would debate that his impact on popular music both directly and indirectly in 2011 was as MASSIVE as his bass drops. Suddenly everyone is putting dubstep-inspired DJ-tracks along with their songs – it looks to be the next ‘new thing’ in pop after the already tired singer/rapper collaborations that have become omnipresent the last couple of years. Perhaps showing the influence of Daft Punk’s epic Prime Time of Your Life video, this week Skrillex uploaded the official video for the title song of his new EP Bangarang, which…

Introducing Your Child to N.W.A the RIGHT Way …

Musical education is a critically important part of the cultural upbringing of every child, and this video shows how to introduce your child at an early age to the seminal ‘gangsta’ rap group N.W.A without potentially compromising OTHER messages you are trying to teach them … … oh just watch and enjoy!

Gary Husband Preps for the Launch of Dirty & Beautiful Volume 2

I reviewed Dirty & Beautiful Volume 1 early last year, concluding : There is no fluff here – perhaps that is why this is ‘volume 1?, as the next volume is due in 2011 sometime. And while I might have appreciated getting more time to get to know each grouping on the record, this is Husband’s project, and if the goal was to show how vital and vibrant and versatile fusion can be in 2010 … and if that wasn’t the goal he should review the original goal! Because this record takes some of the great names in fusion, pulls…

Skrillex Provides a Look Inside the Mothership Tour

While there are many who simply don’t ‘get’ dubstep/electronica music in general and folks like Skrillex or Deadmau5 in specific … there can be little debate at the massive impact they have had on music this year. Having been to a Skrillex concert with one son and a relatively high profile rap concert with my other son this year … the difference in the energy, commitment and enthusiasm in the largely 18-24 year old audiences was stunning. The dubstep crowd was simply on fire the entire time, and Skrillex and his ‘Mothership Tour’ (not to be confused with P-Funk’s Mothership…

Music Smasher Searches Across Streaming Music Services

If you are contemplating signing up for a streaming music service, or are unhappy with the one you are using, chances are one major consideration is the music library. While ‘music discovery’ is all well and good, ultimately we all want to just want to listen to music. Now we hear of a new service developed by Matt Montag called ‘Music Smasher’. As the screen at top shows, you simply enter some terms and the site searches across all of the major streaming services. According to Montag: “I developed it to simplify the task of searching across Spotify, Rdio, Grooveshark,…

Most musicians are constantly looking for new material to play – stuff we write or songs by other people. Now Alfred Music, who acts as the official print music publisher of thousands of popular artists, songwriters, and composers, has released a great collection of 152 songs arranged for piano, vocal and guitar.

National Learn to Play Day on Saturday March 31st, 2012

National Learn to Play Day is an even being sponsored in the UK by the ‘Music for All’ charity on Saturday March 31st, 2012. Her are a few details: On this day, the UK’s musical instrument shops will open their doors and offer free instrument “taster” lessons to the general public. There are 15 million people in the UK that either want to play an instrument or used to play one. The Day is designed to welcome people into music shops and to inspire them to get playing. People are often surprised to discover that they ARE musical and simply…

Want Android 4.0 or Google Chrome on Your Phone? Don’t Buy a Motorola!

Recently Motorola talked about the difficulty and complexity of updating the operating system on phones, placing the blame for the ‘expectations game’ squarely on Google and how they choose to roll things out: When Google does a release of the software … they do a version of the software for whatever phone they just shipped. The rest of the ecosystem doesn’t see it until you see it. Hardware is by far the long pole in the tent, with multiple chipsets and multiple radio bands for multiple countries. It’s a big machine to churn. So when Google released Android 4.0 Ice…

Hands-On Review of the Republic Wireless $19 ‘Unlimited’ Cell Phone Plan

Back in early November I wrote about Republic Wireless, a company offering a compelling $19 a month unlimited plan with no contract. I ordered a phone the same day, and it arrived late in December. Let’s take a quick look at what they have to offer! The Hype: Newsflash: anything a cell network can do, the Internet can do better and cheaper. So we think a truly smart smartphone should make a habit of using Wi-Fi for everything. Surfing. Texting. Sharing. And, yes, even talking. There isn’t an app for this. And you definitely shouldn’t have to download any special…
