Review: JAVOedge Fiber Cases for the Amazon Kindle 2

It’s a common occurrence.  One of shock and disbelief.  One experienced by many first time Kindle 2 owners.  Here’s how it goes….

They open the package.  Unpack all the included items.  And then, scratching their head in shock and wonder, they begin rifling through the contents of the box once again looking for it.

What is it they’re looking for you ask?  The included case of course.  It’s only then that they realize that the Amazon Kindle 2 comes with no case.

Although perhaps surprising to some, probably not necessarily a bad thing.  After all, how many of us actually use the plain Jane, cheapo, pleather case that’s included with a new mobile device?

Not many.

JAVOedge has been making accessories for several mobile devices for a numbers of years.  I recently received two of their new cases from their Fiber line for the Amazon Kindle 2.

The Flip Style Fiber Case features a unique alternative to regular leather.  It has dotted, matrix like pattern that spans across the entire surface of the case.  It features a nice amount of padding that both protects the device and makes it comfortable to hold.

The Kindle 2 slides into the case from the top and is simply held in by friction.  It’s held in tightly too.  Your Kindle is not going to fall out.

The top lid features magnetic closure and does a good job of staying closed when you want it to.

Once opened the inside of the case reveals a pocket for storing documents as well as a pouch for business cards.  There are cut outs on the side of the case for access to the Home, Page and Menu buttons as well as the Keyboard.

The keyboard itself becomes slightly recessed behind the case but that does not effect that ease at which one is able to type.

There are vented holes on the back of the case which prevents the Kindle 2’s speaker from becoming muffled.

One the back of the case there is a flip out stand which allows one to view the Kindle in a hands free type mode.  The flap on the back stays closed by snaps.

Personally I don’t see much use for this feature.  Maybe I’m just old but I need the Kindle close.  If I placed it on my desk it really wouldn’t be at the proper viewing angle to read.  Not to mention you have to press the next page button rather often anyway.

There is a cutout on the bottom of the case that allows you to charge the Kindle 2 while it’s still in the case.

And the same is true at the top for the headphone port.

I’m currently using this case for my Kindle 2 exclusively.  I like the look of it and it’s nice to hold in the hand.  The cover flips up and all the way out of the way.  This leads to easy viewing of the screen.  It features a nice amount of protection while still offering access to all the Kindle’s functions without having to remove the case to do so.

What I like – Nice alternative to plain leather.  Great fit.  Good padding.

What I don’t like – Stand on back not needed.

The other case for the Kindle 2 that makes up JAVOedge’s Fiber line is the Book Stlye Case.

This case features the same stylish pattern and soft padding as the Flip Up Fiber case but it comes in a book style folio type case.

Unsnapping the case’s cover reveals an inner pocket for documents and a clear business card slot.  There’s also an elastic pen holder that runs down the middle of the case.

Just like the Flip Up case there are cut outs on the side of the case for access to the Home, Page and Menu buttons as well as the Keyboard.  The keyboard itself becomes slightly recessed behind the case but that does not effect that ease at which one is able to type.

There are vented holes on the back of the case which prevents the Kindle 2’s speaker from becoming muffled.

The Book Style case also has cutouts at the bottom so you can charge your Kindle while it’s in the case.

The flap over of the Book Style case is heavy enough that it easily flaps out of the way giving way to all of the Kindle’s screen and functions.  When on it gives the feeling and size of a standard hardcover book.

What I like – Nice alternative to plain leather.  Great fit.  Good padding.

What I don’t like – Personally don’t like dealing with the flap cover while reading.
