Puckipuppy Hummingbirds Electric Bike Review: Foldable, Portable, and Powerful

The Lowdown

In my few weeks of testing the Puckipuppy Hummingbirds, I’ve really enjoyed the convenience and flexibility this bike offers. We could keep it folded in the back of the garage when not in use, but when unfolded, it had all the features of a full-fledged electric bicycle.

Overall
4.8

Pros

Convenient and flexible

Folds nicely

Great power and battery life

Full suspension

750W engine is powerful enough to handle hills

Cons

  • The addition of a clip that keeps the two sides of the bike together when folded would be helpful

The Puckipuppy Hummingbirds is a convenient electric bicycle that folds for storage and offers a powerful motor with a great battery capacity. Not lacking in features, the foldable Hummingbirds offers an LED display, front and rear suspension, a 7-speed transmission, disc brakes, and an LED headlight. Retailing at $699, it’s a pretty good value for any commuter.

The Puckipuppy Hummingbirds is an electric bike that can do it all. It folds, can go off-road, and has plenty of power and battery capacity for longer trips.

The bike is made out of an aluminum alloy, offering a compromise between weight and strength, and it has 20″ by 4″ fat tires out of the box.

It has an LED display, thumb throttle, Shimano 7-speed transmission, and derailleur. A built-in pedal cadence sensor allows the computer to sense your pedaling and adjust based on the level of pedal assist you selected on the LED display.

The saddle is made of extremely comfortable memory foam and is good for long rides.

Assembling the Puckipuppy Hummingbirds was pretty easy, taking me about 45 minutes by myself. The included wrench set was really helpful, and I look forward to using it again on future projects.

The only issue during assembly was that the nuts that would hold the kickstand assembly on the bike were missing. Puckipuppy customer service was responsive; however, despite sending a pack of miscellaneous nuts and bolts, none fit. I had to source a few nuts locally, but it was a minor inconvenience.

Design and Portability

The Puckipuppy Hummingbirds e-bike shines with its compact and foldable design. This feature is particularly beneficial for urban commuters who need a bike that fits easily into small apartments or car trunks.

When folded, the bike measures 37″ long by 29.52″ tall, making it incredibly portable and easy to store. It weighs 71 pounds.

My biggest concern is that it’s on the heavy side and slightly cumbersome or awkward to move when folded. There is no clasp that holds the two halves together, so the hinge tends to move.

Riding Comfort

Comfort is a key aspect of the Puckipuppy Hummingbirds e-bike, thanks to its full suspension system. This design effectively absorbs shocks and vibrations, ensuring a smooth ride over various terrains.

Whether navigating bumpy city streets or exploring off-road paths, the bike’s suspension provides a cushioned ride that minimizes rider fatigue. In addition, Puckipuppy includes a very comfortable memory foam seat, perfect for long rides.

Performance and Range

Under the hood, the Puckipuppy Hummingbirds boasts a 750W brushless hub motor, delivering robust power for tackling hills and long-distance rides.

The 48V 15Ah lithium-ion battery offers an impressive range of up to 60 miles on a single charge with a payload capacity of 400 pounds, depending on the pedal assist level and terrain.

The top speed per Puckipuppy is 25 miles per hour, and I confirmed this during my test. This combination makes it a reliable choice for daily commutes and longer excursions.

Technological Integration

The bike has an intuitive LCD that provides real-time speed, battery life, and information on distance traveled. This feature is especially useful for monitoring performance and planning rides.

Additionally, the bike includes front and rear LED lights, enhancing visibility and safety during nighttime rides.

Durability and Versatility

Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy frame and 20″ x 4.0″ all-terrain fat tires, the Puckipuppy Hummingbirds e-bike is designed for durability and versatility. It supports a maximum load capacity of 400 lbs, making it suitable for a wide range of riders and riding conditions.

The Hummingbirds is allegedly made to fit riders 5.2′ to 6.23′ tall, weighing up to 400 pounds. However, my wife, who is 5’2′, had difficulty mounting the bike with the saddle at the lowest possible height.

I guess she’s on the cusp of the shortest person who should be riding, but with a powerful electric vehicle like this, she expected some more stability getting on and off the bike.

In my few weeks of testing the Puckipuppy Hummingbirds, I’ve really enjoyed the convenience and flexibility this bike offers. We could keep it folded in the back of the garage when not in use, but when unfolded, it had all the features of a full-fledged electric bicycle.

If you’re feeling lazy, you can ride using just the throttle to hit 20 mph, or you can use pedal assist to pedal a bit and let the bike help you maintain a good speed. Or you can turn off pedal assist and bike completely manually! The choice is yours.

My complaints are few and fairly minor and expected for a bike of this style: The Puckipuppy Hummingbirds is heavy and cumbersome to move when folded. It’s also slightly too tall for my 5’2″ wife to comfortably mount and dismount, but these are all things that can be planned for if you read the bike’s specifications.

The 750W hub motor is powerful enough to climb steep inclines, which is necessary in my neighborhood, and the front and rear suspension make for a comfortable ride even over bumps.

For $699, I believe the Puckipuppy Hummingbirds is a great value, especially considering its versatility. I’ve become a huge fan!

The Puckipuppy Hummingbirds retails for $699; it will soon be available directly from the manufacturer.
