So many of the things in your home are smart, but wouldn’t it be cool if the exterior of your home was smart, too? Imagine if you could control your backyard landscaping lights, the lights you have hanging under your patio, your pond, holiday inflatables, up to 1000′ of holiday lights, or other outdoor items with Alexa, Google Assistant, or Apple Homekit. With the new Lutron Caseta Outdoor Smart Plug, you can.

You can use the new Caseta Outdoor Smart Plug to put your lights on a schedule, for instance, or you can control them whenever you’d like through the iOS or Android Lutron app; you can also use a wireless Pico remote or the switch on the Smart Plug on or off on the device itself — because it seems silly to have to whip out your phone to control something if you are standing right next to it, right?

But even better, if you have a Lutron Smart Bridge or Smart Bridge Pro, you can use your voice to control whatever is plugged into the Outdoor Smart Plug with Alexa, Google Assistant, or Apple HomeKit. So yes, that means you can tell Alexa to run your bedtime routine as you lie down, and the assistant will make sure that everything you want off is off and anything you want on as your head hits the pillow.

Lutron Caseta Outdoor Smart Plug

The Caseta Outdoor Smart Plug uses Clear Connect technology (a Type-A RF Technology that works through walls and floors) via the Lutron Smart Bridge or Smart Bridge Pro so that you can control the Smart Plug from anywhere through the Lutron app. If you want to make the outside of your house look like someone is home while you’re on vacation, which is more believable than just having your interior lights automatically go on to mimic your usual schedule, you can do it. The Outdoor Smart Plug is built to last with a polycarbonate body and solid core construction to protect its inner electronics; it also has an IP65 rating, so it can handle anything the weather throws at it.

I need one of these for the party lights we have strung on our front porch — as it is, we have to plug them in when we want them on and unplug them when we’re done, which means half the time, I don’t even mess with them. Adding the Caseta Outdoor Smart Plug to the setup would make them a lot more functional!

There are plenty of other ways the Outdoor Smart Plug can be used, though. It can even handle a ½ horsepower motor, so if you’ve always wanted to be able to control your backyard fountain remotely, this should do the trick! Or, if you’d rather not have to go outside in the snow to turn on your holiday inflatables in the yard, you can put them on a schedule or turn them on and off as part of a routine. I’m sure you can think of plenty of ways one of these would come in handy.

You can get the Lutron Caseta Outdoor Smart Plug for $79.99 from Amazon, Best Buy, Lowe’s, and Home Depot.

It is amazing how far technology has come. Or should I say how far technology is going.
