3D-Printed Instruments Hit Some Sharp Notes

When our buddy Paul Strauss, aka TheAwesomer, told me he just heard a band playing instruments that were all created on 3D-Printers while walking the floor at CES 2014 I was a skeptic. Instruments that were printed? I thought he was pulling my leg. Then I heard them and (cue up the Monkeys…), I’m a Believer.

CES Innovations Honorees and the Gear Diary Connection

It is always cool to see which products win CES Innovation Honors. It is even cooler to see products we have covered from companies with whom we work among them. Judie and I spent time yesterday checking a few out. Here are some CES Innovations Honorees we have have previously shared with you.

JBL Authentic Speaker Line Is the Real Deal in Sound

JBL’s new JBL Authentic L8 and JBL Authentic L16 wireless speakers bring classic speaker design together with superior wireless technology to create an authentic and impressive sound experience. Each features premium materials, optimized low-frequency and high-frequency JBL transducers and meticulous acoustic design. With AirPlay, DLNA and Bluetooth connectivity they cut the cord but not the audio quality.

Corning Gorilla Glass Is Now Strong AND Germ-Free

Know those “Dirty mouth? Clean it up!” commercials? Well, they ain’t got nuthin’ on Corning. Yup, Corning Gorilla Glass is now strong AND clean thanks to new antimicrobial properties. It is, in fact, the first EPA-registered antimicrobial cover glass. Don’t think it’s a big deal? Just look at your phone’s screen under a high-power microscope and you’ll change your tune.

Blue Microphone (Sort Of) Reveals their New Mo-Fi Headphones

The teasers were compelling. “Mo-Fi is coming” they said. The video look didn’t reveal much more. And the early release? It got us interested without revealing anything new. One thing became clear- Blue Microphone, a company whose products we love, was getting into the headphone business. That could only be good for those of us who love our music.

Seagate and LaCie Announce New Products at CES2014

We started CES 2014 by meeting with Seagate and LaCie and looking at some of their new and upcoming products. Among them are a new wireless drive, a 4TB portable drive (a first), and a gorgeous silver hard drive that looks more like a work of art than a drive. Here are a few pictures of the products.

Take It (Almost) All off with the Lifeproof Nuud for iPhone 5C

So you got yourself a fancy new iPhone 5S or colorful iPhone 5C for Christmas, Hannukah or Festivus. Congratulations! Now you want to make sure you keep your new phone protected. It is easy to do, so long as you pick up one of Lifeproof’s cases. And if you go Nuud, you won’t even lose direct contact with your screen.

Israeli Beer That Tastes … Heavenly

There was a time when the only Israeli beer you could get in Israel might best be described as a poor excuse for beer. (I’m looking at you Macabee and GoldStar!) Seven years ago all that began to change as Israelis developed a taste for quality microbrews. Among them is an IPA from the very first brewery in Jerusalem.

x-doria Scene Plus for iPhone 5S Brings Brings 3D Protection

Yesterday we took a look at x-doria’s Scene Plus for iPhone 5C. It will come as little surprise that the company is also offering a case with this great design for the iPhone 5S. We have one of the nicely protective, very cool-looking cases in hand and thought we might take a look. At under $30 they are a great deal.

Booq’s Got Some Nerve, and It Ships Later This Month

I’m a fan of booq’s various bag offerings and love it when they announce a new product. The upcoming booq Boa nerve graphite is a slightly new take on a familiar and highly functional messenger bag. The $149.95 bag fits up to a 15″ laptop, has all of booq’s quality and ships later this month.

Lightning Strikes Blue Microphone’s Spark Digital

I was impressed by Blue Microphone’s Spark Digital. In my review I noted that it, “the world’s first studio condenser microphone to offer both USB and iPad connectivity” does an excellent job of recording audio from both your Mac and your iPhone. I did, however, lament the fact that it only shipped with a 30-PIN Apple connector. No longer!

Google Glass Goes iOS with Release of MyGlass for iPhone

After a brief appearance earlier this week Google’s MyGlass app has made the official jump to iOS. That’s great news for Glass-wearing iPhone-users since it means more functionality than iOS-users previously enjoyed from Glass. That includes getting directions, capturing screencasts, and more. We’ll see how the iOS version stacks up over the next few days and report back.
