If 2018 is the year you have determined will be the time when you get yourself back in shape, two items that you should put on your wish list are the Nokia Steel Activity and Sleep Watch and the Nokia Body Cardio Scale.
The scale is one of those household appliances most people seem to love to hate. It’s useful, but it’s sort of like Schroedinger’s scale: it can boost your ego or break your heart every time you step onto it. Nokia wants to make the scale a bit more useful and helpful, even if it can’t always give good news!
I have a soft spot for gear that works with the Withings app; I’ll admit it. I lost 43 much-needed pounds while using the Withings app in conjunction with their Smart Body Analyzer scale, and I track my nightly sleep with their excellent Aura Connected Clock. So when offered the chance to review the Withings Steel HR, I gladly accepted.
CES always has a few wacky gadgets that make you do a triple take, and this year Withings stepped up to the plate with their “Hair Coach” device, aka a connected hairbrush. Yes, you can now track your hair brushing, and get a full report on how dry/oily/split your hair is that day. No word on whether it also tracks your calories from brushing, however.
The Withings Pulse Ox caught my eye because it not only measures and monitors steps, distance walked, sleep, elevation climbed, and calories, but it also measures your heart rate and blood oxygen level.
Two of the things that smartwatches keep failing at are thickness and size; well, okay, battery life has been an issue, too. Withings, part of the Nokia family and makers of the great looking Activité health-tracking watch line, has just announced their new Steel HR; it’s a health tracker, and it’s a gorgeous, connected watch with 25-days of battery life.
A healthy adult’s temperature hovers in the 98.something range, but we normally don’t give our temperature a second thought until we feel like crap. But once we feel bad, the first thing we want is that tangible proof that we aren’t just being wusses — that we really can call in sick — and that’s why we have thermometers.
Taking a temperature when you or a loved one is sick usually involves sticking a thermometer into one orifice or another. That’s not very fun for the person who is ill. Today, Withings, part of the Nokia family, is announcing their new Thermo — the first Wi-Fi-connected temporal thermometer — which we first saw at CES 2016.
Withings isn’t exactly a household name outside of the fitness world, but they make fitness trackers, blood pressure cuffs, baby monitors, scales, and similar devices that all work together under the same ecosystem. That ecosystem has a new umbrella today, as Nokia announced they’re acquiring Withings and diving into the fitness tracking world.
Over the past couple of years, I had managed to gain some very unwanted pounds rather rapidly. I thought at first that my weight gain was hormonal, or perhaps I had a thyroid problem. I was running and walking long distances regularly, and I was (sporadically) writing down what I ate, but I wasn’t seeing any results.
Sleep and I have a sometimes erratic relationship. Some nights I deal with insomnia, and I might sleep 4 or 5 hours at best; other nights I’ll need to catch up on sleep so badly that I’ll pass out for 12 or more hours. Seems as if Withings is wasting NO time getting out ahead of the competition for CES week as they’ve already released ANOTHER product that will for sure make you keep certain resolutions you made in 2015 stick in the New Year. Today, the leader in connected health products Withings announced they’ve extended their reach on the health market by unveiling their Withings Thermo.
Just in time for the holidays, Withings has updated their Home monitoring system to include a baby monitor mode. Previously the unobtrusive Home would “just” monitor your house (and its air quality) and allow two-way interaction with the people inside, snapping photos and recording video clips (like that wasn’t already awesome). Now, they’ve added Baby Monitor Mode.
During CES 2015, Judie was part of an interview with the CEO of Withings. She loves the brown Withings Activité watch she bought (she has also since purchased it in black) and was good enough to get me a review sample of the smaller, less expensive Activité Pop.
I posted recently about my quest for a new fitness tracker, and I found one that (so far) I love. It’s only been 24 hours but it seems to check off all my boxes…and it wasn’t any of the ones on my initial list! It isn’t even that new, but my new Pebble is exactly what I was looking for!
Late last year, Apple gave Fitbit the boot from Apple retail stores. There was a lot of speculation as to why Fitbit was kicked out, but most people assumed it was due to Fitbit pulling out of Apple’s Healthkit initiative. Competitors (and Healthkit partners) like Jawbone, Mio and Nike remained in the stores. Until this week, when everyone was booted!
I tested the fitness tracker waters with the Pivotal Living 1 and stuck with it despite the bugs. Unfortunately, I forgot it wasn’t waterproof, and a dip in the pool brought on the death of the PL1. It’s time to replace it, and I’ve narrowed my choices down to the Fitbit Charge HR, Withings Activité Pop, or Garmin Vivosmart.
Withings has just made two big announcements about three of their marquee products. First, they announced that their gorgeous Activité and Activité Pop activity tracking watches will be compatible with Android starting tomorrow, March 2nd. And second, they announced that their Withings Home monitoring device will soon offer the option to save 30 days of video footage in the cloud.
During CES 2015 I picked up a Withings Activité Pop; it hasn’t been off my wrist since. It is the anti-smartwatch, and it doesn’t try to do too much. At the other end of the spectrum is the Samsung Gear S; it tries to do it all, and thanks to Sprint, that even means replacing your smartphone!
If you like the look of a regular wristwatch but want the benefits of activity tracking, you’ve probably heard of the Withings Activité. It’s a beautiful Swiss watch with a second analog hand that indicates your activity levels, and syncs to your phone. But it’s a bit rich at $450, so Withings is aiming for the mainstream with a $149 Activité Pop!
