I’ve been a fan of Pitaka iPhone MagEZ cases for some time. Judie sent me one she had reviewed a number of years ago, and I haven’t looked back. The cases are thin, light, highly protective, and they work with Pitaka’s MagEZ line of accessories. Sure, Apple has MagSafe, but Pitaka was already doing something similar for years.

The first thing you notice when you take the Pitaka MagEZ Case for iPhone 12 from the box is how light it is. Thanks to the Aramid fiber from which it is constructed, the case weighs just .6oz (17.1g) and measures just .03” thick (.85mm). Yes, despite looking and feeling like it is barely there, the case offers more protection than you might otherwise imagine.

Better Grip and Feel: 3D Grip technology leaves a textured pattern on the surface of the phone case that not only improves grip but also feels comfortable in the hand.

The case looks similar to other Pitaka cases I have used with my previous iPhones, but Pitaka further refines the design with each iteration. For example, the 3D Grip technology they introduced a few years ago finds its way into this case. 3D Grip adds just enough texture to the otherwise smooth material making it easier to hold; the texture is subtle but does the job quite well.

Combining Style and Protection: Crafted using aerospace-grade aramid fiber, the slim MagEZ Case offers protection with a minimalist design.

The Aramid fiber is rigid. Getting your iPhone into the case is as easy as putting it into place and pressing down until the phone snaps into the case.

A subtle lip along the upper edge of the case rises over the phone’s screen. This ensures the phone will remain securely in place until you want to remove it.

The lip also means the case gives a small amount of lay-on-the-table protection. Yes, as I tried to suggest earlier, this case may look like a simple shell, but it offers more protection than you might expect.

Although slim and lightweight, the aramid fiber case offers your iPhone 12 stylish protection without adding bulk.

Pitaka has case options for each of the new iPhones. And while the iPhone 12 and the iPhone 12 Pro may look the same size and shape, Pitaka notes subtle differences. As a result, you should make sure to offer the correct case for your specific phone.

Here’s our video look:

While I love the protective but minimalist design of the MagEZ case, that’s only part of the reason I’m a fan. The other reason is the range of MagEZ accessories the company currently offers.

I have a Pitaka MagEZ Mount Qi in my car and a MagEZ Juice Chi charger on my desk here at home. Both magnetic mounts are designed to work with the metal strips embedded in the case. It holds the iPhone in perfect alignment with the Qi chargers built into the magnetic mounts.

Magnetic Connectivity: Attach the MagEZ Case for iPhone 12 to any MagEZ magnetic wireless charger, such as the MagEZ Mount Qi, for a seamless charging experience.

Wireless Charging Friendly: Use the MagEZ Case for iPhone 12 with any Qi-certified wireless charger, including the MagEZ magnetic chargers.

Unfortunately, there is a compatibility issue with Apple’s new MagSafe technology and many of my Qi wireless chargers. I’m not sure what the issue is, but there is a growing list of complaints on Apple’s website. You can read more about the issue here. I’m not happy, but I have not yet given up hope that a software update might resolve the issue. Some people have been able to resolve the issue with a forced restart, but that doesn’t always work. As a reminder, you can do a forced restart on your iPhone 12 by following these steps:

  • Press and release the volume up button
  • Then press and release the volume down button
  • Then press and hold the power button until the Apple Logo appears

Regardless, I’m a fan of this case and think it is worth every penny of its price.

What I Like: Thin and light; Protective; Offers lay-on-the-table protection; Metal plates hold it in place with Pitaka MagEX charging accessories; A growing range of colors lets you choose your style

What Needs Improvement: There are currently issues with some iPhone 12s working with non-Apple wireless Qi chargers pending an update from Apple — this is a widespread problem people need to keep bringing up with Apple
