All the iPad vs Vaporware Nonsense is Growing Tiring…

In a recent interview Acer’s Chairman JT Wang predicted that the iPad’s near-100% market share in the tablet space would drop to between 20 and 30 percent.

Now PC World has posted an article entitled “Five Reasons to Pick an HP Tablet Over an iPad”.

So I thought I would add my voice into the mix and offer up Five Reasons They Should SHUT IT! No, actually I only need ONE!

Neither Acer nor HP has actually released a device and until they do there is NOTHING to talk about. Nothing! I mean, when we were at CES we saw TONS of tablets and all were promised in 2010. In fact most were promised in the first HALF of 2010. Then the iPad came out and all those projects were either scrapped or pushed back and retooled. Now it is the end of August and we still see nothing. Sure there are lots of rumors and promises but there is nothing actually in hand.

So predicting Apple’s share dropping to 20-30 percent when you haven’t actually released anything yourself is ridiculous. And pitting the iPad against a device that doesn’t even exist in the market place yet is just stupid. It is like announcing the birth of your daughter the doctor… it means nothing and just makes you look silly. So please… as Jon Stewart said on Crossfire a few years ago“Please… Stop…”

I remember before the iPhone came out, it seemed most of the media – while they thought it was really cool – were predicting it’s ultimate failure because the smartphone market was already saturated, it was too expensive, or MS/Palm already had the market, that no one would carry it, and on and on the list went. When it succeeded then all of a sudden everything because a potential iPhone “killer”. Well even with the amazing growth of Android, the iPhone is still here – still improving – still growing in units sold and it’s managed to blow up the smartphone market (where before it was only a small part of the phone market) changing the SIZE of that market as well.

Then the iPad came along and I watched nearly the same pattern unfold. People were predicting it would fail. Again – it was too expensive, people had already shown that they don’t want tablets, etc. etc. Then it is released and redefines the market and sells in amazing numbers and now everything is an iPad “killer”.

    Yawn.

Eventually, excellent competing devices will appear. I have no doubt about it, just like excellent Android devices appeared in the iPhone market space. But guess what? They won’t kill the iPad or damage it’s market. The market will just continue to grow. And we haven’t even talked about what (if any) effect the release of iOS 4 on the iPad later this year will have on the sale of iPads. And even if devices with better specs come out this year, so what? Apple will just release a device with better specs next year. And the cycle will continue. 🙂

The point is that all the speculation is nonsense and completely useless. Apple will continue to have an excellent market – even if their “share” increases/decreases it won’t matter because they keep causing the overall size of the market to expand.

It’s an interesting set of markets and things will continue to be interesting enough even without the empty speculation or reports on vaporware devices!
