Help Us Make the No-Spill Kangaroo Cup a Kickstarter Reality

This isn’t our typical Kickstarter post. That’s why we are departing from our usual Kickstarter format. No, this is a special Kickstarter post and in it we want to tell you a story and then offer a challenge. It’s a great story, and it’s a worthwhile challenge. The Story: A young girl sees her grandfather dealing with Parkinson’s. Among the challenges he faces are spills resulting from his constant shaking. She doesn’t want to see her grandfather embarrassed by spills. She doesn’t want her grandmother to constantly be dealing with the spills either. So “after a bit of experimentation, she…

XCOM Enemy Unknown Video First Look Review!

Type of app: Strategy Platform/where to buy: PC; available at Steam Developer: Firaxis / 2K Games Description: XCOM: Enemy Unknown will place you in control of a secret paramilitary organization called XCOM. As the XCOM commander, you will defend against a terrifying global alien invasion by managing resources, advancing technologies, and overseeing combat strategies and individual unit tactics. So I have taken the opportunity to review the opening levels…

Intuit Releases Quicken 2013 with Ties to iOS/Android Apps Through ‘Quicken Cloud

I have been using Quicken for a long time – since sometime way back in the 90s when I was still using a Mac Classic with a 9″ screen! And so for the past 20 years when it came to check out my finances or pay bills or whatever … I always turned to Quicken. Now they are back with their latest version Quicken 2013 – and have added mobile apps as well! Here is the press release: With the new Quicken® 2013, from Intuit Inc. (Nasdaq:INTU), people can get their financial lives on track and know exactly where they…

Aranez Flip Samsung Galaxy S3 Leather Case Review

One of the first things of concern with a high-end smartphone is protecting it from the inevitable bumps and bangs and falls. You can go to your local ‘Five Below’ and find racks of cheap coverage that will protect your phone … but what if you want something that actually looks good? Well, for the Samsung Galaxy S III, Aranez has you covered with a leather cover worthy of your new phone. Let’s take a look! The Hype: The Aranez Flip Samsung Galaxy S3 Leather Case is a luxurious cover for your Samsung Galaxy S3. Made from sumptuous premium cow…

Samsung Galaxy S III from U.S. Cellular Review and Video Hands-On

When it comes to the world of smartphones, there is Apple and Samsung and everyone else. As noted in the past, Samsung and Apple combined for more than 100% of all profits during the last quarter! Whereas Samsung used to be famous for pushing out numerous mid-line phones with different design schemes, over the past couple of years they have focused on delivering top-end devices that offer compelling features – and have essentially become the flagship Android brand. Late this summer Samsung launched their latest flagship, the Galaxy S III. The folks at US Cellular were kind enough to send…

The Telikin Brings Computers to the Masses

Before I tell you about the Telikin computer system, I need to tell you about my grandma. See, my grandma was always on the cutting edge. She was an early adopter, from microwaves to VCRs and DVD players. We used to joke that if she were still driving and needed a cell phone in 2007, she would have been first in line for an iPhone. So needless to say, my grandma had to have a computer. However, setting someone in their late 80s up with a computer was not that simple. The entire process of interacting with a computer was…

ThinkTank Photo Street Walker HardDrive Backpack Review

photos by Kevin Stanford We have already looked at a number of offerings from Think Tank Photo. We reviewed the ThinkTank Retrospective 7 Camera Bag. (Read the review.) We also reviewed the ThinkTank Photo StreetWalker Camera Backpack that has now taken up residence with Judie. (Read the review.) And finally we reviewed the Think Tank Photo Urban Disguise 35 V2.0. (Read the review.) As I was finishing this initial series of reviews I commented that I wish I had something that would carry all my gear AND my 15″ MacBook Pro Retina. A short time later the ThinkTank Photo Street Walker…

HTC and Motorola Remind Us that EVERY Android Sale is an ‘As Is’ Screw-Over

Apple is far from perfect, but if there is one thing they have demonstrated in the mobile space, it is how to ensure that nearly all users have the latest possible operating system revision as quickly as possible, and to keep updating those systems as long as the hardware is sustainable (obviously this is setting aside things like ‘Siri exclusivity’ and so on). Google and Android on the other hand seem to operate on a couple of different mantras – WYSIWYG and Caveat Emptor. In other words, do not ever expect anything except what you buy … and be careful…

Of Sparks, Mimes and Remote Controls…

Would you look at this… the all-new Chevy Spark is??? remote-controlled?? As the release we received notes, While not for kids, the 2013 Chevy Spark is perfect for the city-dweller or….a mime? Over the next few months, Chevy is importing their export – the Spark – by releasing a series of videos highlighting its standout features in a way that is uniquely Spark. As a case in point we were sent links to the first videos in the lineup. In this video some rather forgetful mimes help save the day with a little help from the OnStar RemoteLink mobile app….

All-In With the New iPad

Mike and Carly have discussed the fact that the iPad is their 80% Plus computer. Mike even went so far as to try to use the iPad exclusively for a few days. (You can read about it here.) Well, I am embarking on my iPad-only experiment although I do so out of necessity. You see, prior to the MacBook ProR I had at least two computers. Usually that meant a desktop and a laptop but, for a time it meant a 11″ and a 13″ MacBook Air. That meant I always has a “spare” Mac available to me. Not…

Gear Diary Video Chat – Smartphone vs Smartphone Edition … and More!

For the last couple of Gear Chats, Dan and I have compared and contrasted things we both owned – the Google Nexus 7 and Amazon Kindle Fire HD. But as I have been greatly enjoying the Samsung Galaxy S III the great folks at US Cellular have provided me for review, and Dan has had his iPhone 5 for a bit, it seemed like a great opportunity for us to discuss the things we thought about what are arguably the ‘twin flagships’ of the iOS and Android world. Of course, from there we veer off into discussions of other things…

The Demise of the Once-Great Goozex Game Trading Site

No, they’re not dead … yet. I have written many times about the game trading site Goozex for one reason – it was a great idea put forth by some great guys for the benefit of gamers. Largely gamer-driven, the site used a combination of ‘tokens’ and ‘points’ for trades. To ‘buy’, you would use a token and a number of points related to the current value of a game – for example, a new game like Borderlands 2 would be ~1200 points (the maximum), whereas something like 2009’s Drakensang: The Dark Eye would be 100 points. And better still,…

FS-PRO Camera Sling Strap with F-1 Foldable Mounting Plate Review

We reviewed the Carry Speed DS-Slim Camera Sling Strap with D-1 Wide Platform Ballhead back in September. (Read the review.) I was impressed with the system. It was a HUGE improvement over the strap Canon included with my T3i. Still, I didn’t love the fact that, like so many other camera straps that attach to the bottom of a DSLR, it took over the tripod mount. That meant the connector needed to be removed whenever I wanted to mount the camera on a tripod, and while that wasn’t a deal-breaker it was an annoyance. Thankfully there was an easy solution….

Lexus Ad Highlights the Tech in the 2013 ES with a Hi-Tech Ad

I love my IS 250. There are times when I feel like it is a tiny bit too small, and I would have preferred something like the larger ES but, 99% of the time I could not be more happy with the car I chose to lease last year. Lexus is pushing the 2013 ES with an extensive marketing campaign and, this time out, they have an advertisement that, “like the entirely new ES, merges next-generation technologies with stunning visuals”. Starting today, you can bring the Lexus ES print ad found in today’s issue of Sports Illustrated magazine to life…

IK Multimedia Puts the ‘Grand’ in Mobile Piano with new iGrand Piano for iPad!

Back in the early 1990s I remember checking out one of the incredible new sampled piano instruments at E.U. Wurlitzer in Boston. It was also really expensive, but as the salesperson noted – if you need the incredible sound quality and attention to detail, it is well worth it … but if you are OK with piano sounds on your other sample playback synths, there is no price that will make sense. That was something I loved about the Kurzweil K2000 – it had an incredible (to me) sampled piano but didn’t break the bank. Fast forward twenty years and…

Check Out the New Apple iPod Commercial ‘Bounce’

Apple’s latest ad is for their now-shipping updated iPod line, which has the simple description: Every iPod now in color. The commercial is about the cool and colorful iPod new line-up and offers seamless transitions between the Touch, Nano and Shuffle accompanied by a funky song. It is a positive, good-feeling commercial. Some things (good and bad) not mentioned in the video: + The 5th gen iPod Touch is the most ‘iPhone-like’ version yet. – The iPod Touch STILL doesn’t contain a GPS + The Nano is incredibly small and has a 2.5″ screen – But you have to load the Nano…

iEraser Screen Cleaner Review

Nearly every device most of us use today involve some type of touch screen. Phones, tablets, GPS units…you name it and we are smudging the screens. In fact, laptops and desktop monitors somehow seem to get greasy after just a couple of days use. There is not a day that passes that a smudged up screen is not annoying me. Anyone who is a parent of young children like myself know that anytime a kid gets near one of the screens it seems to get grungy. Our devices seem to be magnets for fingerprints and smudges. I recently had the…

Whisper of Fear The Cursed Doll HD for iPad Review

Whisper of Fear: The Cursed Doll is a Hidden Object Puzzle Adventure (HOPA) game. It is available for the iPhone and iPad, and you can get it in the Apple App store. The Developer isVogat / G5 Entertainment. Major features: By now you should know the drill – story-based intro, followed up with puzzles, finding items on location screens, and full-blown hidden object scenes. Whisper of Fear meets the ‘standard framework’ of a hidden object game, to be sure. But where it is distinctive is in the depth and connectedness of the game. Most games have areas you are ‘checking off’,…

Their NB-200 and NB-230 Bluetooth speakers provide in-home quality audio through either a wireless connection with any Bluetooth enabled device, or a 3.5mm aux-in cable connection with a non-Bluetooth device. id America Cushi Dot Soft Foam Pad for iPhone 5 Review

all photos by Kevin Stanford What if I told you that you could stick a piece of 3D foam on the back of your iPhone, and that by doing so you could both protect your phone and make it a little bit more fun? Would you be interested? I was. Id America makes protective 3D skins for the iPhone 4, 4S and 5 called Cushi; they are available with colorful stripes, polka-dots, or an assortment of retro, cartoonish, and other graphic designs. I was sent one of the “Original” collection, a design appropriately called, Owl. I happen to like owls,…
